Leon Simon Obituary

Leon Ronald Simon July 6, 1929 November 6, 2017 RALEIGH - Leon Ronald Simon, 88, called "Fuzzy" by many, died November 6, 2017, at the Memory Care Unit in the Cardinal at North Hills in Raleigh. He was born July 6, 1929, in Arnold, PA, to Leon Prosper and Gladys Moxon Simon. While in high school, his love of football earned him a scholarship to NCSU where he earned his degree in Civil Engineering and a regular army commission in the Corps of Engineers. He always remembered that his education was made possible by his athletic scholarship, and was a loyal supporter of the NCSU athletic department, and a passionate Wolfpack fan. After graduation, he married Mildred Pike of Raleigh. Together they were sent to England, where Leon served his army tour. After leaving the service, he had a successful career managing heavy / highway construction companies in Monroe, NC, and Albuquerque, NM, before retiring in Charlotte, NC. Leon was a man of many interests and hobbies, from hydroponic gardening, rug making, wine making (some more like vinegar), cake baking and especially golf. For thirty years he was a member of the Hound Ears Club in the mountains of North Carolina, and while living in Charlotte, a member of Quail Hollow Country Club. He was known for his love of dogs, one always by his side. In his later life, he and Mildred moved back to Raleigh where their married life began. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mildred, children Carol Simon and husband Robert Baugh of Raleigh, son Scot Simon and wife Sharon of Philadelphia, PA, grandsons Jason Simon, Nicholas Simon, Collin Simon, Spencer Simon, and brother Clifford Simon and wife Patricia of New Kensington, PA. He was preceded in death by his sister, Ann Knapp. The family would like to thank the staff in the Cardinal's Memory Care Unit for all the love, kindness and respect they showed Leon during his short time there. Friends may visit with the family on Friday, November 10, 2017, from 4:00 to 7:00pm at the home of Carol and Bob, at 2813-102 Market Bridge Lane, Raleigh. A private burial will be held at a future date at Historic Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to memorials to the Wake County SPCA, 200 Petfinder Ln., Raleigh, NC 27603 or NCSU Athletic Department, Campus Box 8502, Raleigh, NC 27695. Our love to Mildred, who was always by Leon's side to help & reassure. Leon was a good friend and neighbor to us at The Gardens. He is missed. He & Gigi, his beloved dog, were always a warm & welcome sight while out walking. Leon's cakes were awesome!! Carol and Bob, we are here for you.
