It's been a year now that Uncle Q has been gone. My heart still aches from the hole he left inside. I miss him daily and remember the good times at Christmas Breakfast. He was the BEST...with love Rita.

In Memory of
Quintin McMurray
My name is Sean Mulhall.
Quint was one of my best friends. I will miss him deeply. I first met Quint 25 years ago when he was a police officer for Mecklenburg County and I was a police officer for the City. I liked him from the beginning. He had a solid work ethic and a strong devotion to his family and friends. He often spoke of his love for his family. He would have done anything for any of them.
After the city and county police departments merged, I had the opportunity to work with Quint more. The last 6 years of his police career were spent as a Sergeant in the Homicide Unit. I was also working in Homicide and it was there that the bond of our friendship became strongest. When Quint announced that he planned to retire, I felt a strong sense of loss. I joked with him that he should stay until I could retire with him. That was a few years later than Quint wanted. Quint was one of the finest officers I had ever worked alongside with and I didn’t want him to leave. But, I knew he had earned it and would enjoy having time to himself. And, he did.
After Quint retired, I spoke to him often. Each time I asked him whether he missed working as an officer and each time he quickly responded, “No, not a bit.” He had put in 30 years of devoted service to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department and to the community.
Quint was a man of integrity, compassion and honesty. He was friendly and easy going. His demeanor was always even keeled. Quint was fair in his dealings with other police officers, victim’s families and suspects. He had a keen sense of right and wrong and believed in justice.
But, Quint was also a very private man. He never sought out the spotlight. He worked long and hard hours on some of Charlotte’s toughest murder cases. He never complained nor did he ever try to pat himself on the back. He always gave the credit to others and never focused attention on himself.
Our last endeavor together was a private investigation service. After my retirement, I contacted Quint and we discussed whether to open our own firm. Quint was excited about the prospect and I was excited once again to work with Quint.
True to form, Quint began to research and organize everything from day one for the business. One day he came to my house and told me that he had some books he had reviewed that he felt I should look over too. Then, he handed me a tote bag containing at least a dozen hard-cover books! That was Quint. He was always organized, diligent and punctual.
We also considered developing a website for our business but neither of us knew how to do it. Quint signed up for a class on website design solely to learn how to do it. Then, he developed our website on his own. He placed a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the top of our website. It reads, "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." Everyone knew where Quint stood. He was truly a great man.
Although we worked together on our new venture for only a short time, we enjoyed it. We spent a lot of time together and talked about many things. It was nice to be working with him again. I will miss him.
Throughout our friendship, Quint was also there for me. He was a loyal, true-blue friend. He cared about my family also and always let them know that he was there if they needed anything. Quint had even agreed to be my daughter’s mentor for her high school graduation project.
Just recently, Quint’s health began to fail. He had not been feeling well. After several visits to the doctor, he ended up in the hospital. Quickly, his condition worsened. After a brief time out of the hospital, he was readmitted and passed away. I feel fortunate to have been there with him, his family and close friends at his time of passing. He knew we cared about him. He was peaceful and ready. It is a source of comfort knowing that he died surrounded by those who loved him.
I’d like to share one more quote that Quint used as his motto. “Problems are opportunities for success.” Quint overcame his last and greatest problem with dignity. His success is that he is in Heaven with his loved ones, his mom, dad and Tree. He is in a better place. No discomfort, no worries, no problems.
God Bless you, Quint. Thank you.

I was out of town and just herad the sad news about "Q".He was a very easy person to like, and enjoyed what he did. I think I can say we all liked working with him during the MCPD days.

I was sadden to read in the Mecklenburg County Police Officer's Association newsletter of his passing. "Q" was a good listener and a good teacher. I remember when he asked me to go to vice to work with him several times and I turned it down. I was glad that I was able to join him at his retirement party at the Riverview Inn before I left the area and accept a Police Officer position with the Metropolitan Police Department in DC. I am glad to say "Once a Rural...always a Rural"
I will miss you "Q"

First, our sincere sympathy to the family. Second, knowing Quinton was a lasting experience, he was a hard working, intelligent individual who provided quidance and stimulation for those he worked with. He was fun to be around. Never understood how he could be warm at 32 degrees, may God bless his soul.

I was sad to hear that my cousin Quintin had made his transition. I'll always remember the Sunday visits to the "country" to spend time with Quintin, Tree, Aunt Minnie and Uncle Johnnie. They were simple visits, but full of love, laughter, and great food. Quintin was always proud to show us his latest home improvement project! He was a gentle giant, loved and respected by many!

I wish to express my sincere condolences to the family of Quintin "Q" McMurray in your time of bereavement. I am a retired federal agent who worked with Q in the past and he was as great a person as he was a law enforcement officer. I am glad that he was able to retire and have an opportunity to enjoy life outside the job.
