Robert McNeely Obituary

Robert Ney McNeely, Sr.
WAXHAW -- Mr. McNeely, 89, of Waxhaw, N.C., died Monday, August 23, 2010. Mr. McNeely was born August 21, 1921 in Waxhaw. He served as a Master Gunnery Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II. After serving in the military, Mr. McNeely was employed by Seaboard Coastline Railroad as a conductor for 40 years, where he began his love for trains.
Mr. McNeely was a lifelong member of Waxhaw Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon and an elder. He was recognized in 2007 for his many years of service to the church. Mr. McNeely was passionate about music, especially gospel music. He sang in the church choir and with a local quartet for a number of years. He enjoyed every opportunity that he had to sing. Mr. McNeely was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Geneva King McNeely; his parents; Parley B. and Myrtle McNeely, brothers; Parley B. McNeely, Jr., William P. McNeely, Gibbon E. McNeely, and sister, Helen McNeely Sims.
Mr. McNeely is survived by children: Robert N. McNeely, Jr. and wife Judith of Fleetwood, NC; James E. McNeely and wife Kathy of Stanly, NC; Jane McNeely-Sowell and husband Jackson of Waxhaw, NC; grandchildren: Brad McNeely of Fleetwood, NC., Michael McNeely of Waxhaw, NC, Jonathan McNeely and wife Crystal of Gastonia, NC and Gabrielle McNeely of Cullowhee, NC; step-grandchildren; Christine Queen and husband Greg of Warner Robins, GA, Donna Smith and husband Kerry of Charlotte, NC; two step-great-grandchildren: Renee Smith of Greensboro, NC and Hannah Smith of Charlotte, NC; honorary grandson, Jonathan Couick of Waxhaw, NC, sister-in-law, Joyce McNeely of St. Simons Island, GA and numerous nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate his life will be held on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. at Waxhaw Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow at Waxhaw City Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 until 2:15 at the church.
The family would like to thank the staff of White Oak of Waxhaw and Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte for their loving care and support of Mrs. McNeely and his family. Memorials may be made to Waxhaw Presbyterian Church or Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte.
