Robert Sisk Obituary

Robert Van Sisk
Bob Sisk, age 74, of Charlotte, died peacefully at home on March 13, 2010, surrounded by his family. Bob is remembered as one of Charlotte's best ever junior golfers, as a business and civic leader, as a minister to pastors, as a mentor, and as a loving, wise and patient counsel to friends and family.
Born December 16, 1935 in Charlotte, Bob was the son of his late parents Ruth Moir Sisk and R. Van Sisk. He attended Eastover Elementary, Alexander Graham Junior High School, Central High School, and Myers Park High School, where he graduated in 1953. He graduated from the University of North Carolina where he played on the golf team, was a member of the Sigma Chi social fraternity, won the freshman mathematics award, and was a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma and Phi Beta Kappa honorary scholastic achievement fraternities.
He was married to his beloved wife, the former Mary Lance Van Every, for 54 years.
Many Charlotteans will remember Bob as one of its finest post-war junior golfers. He was a two time winner of both the North Carolina Scholastic Golf Championship and the Carolinas Interscholastic Championship. He and his partner, Bob Brannan of Greensboro, won the national junior Four Ball Championship. At age 13, Bob was the youngest player in the field of his first of three times competing in the USGA Junior National Championship. He was beaten on the last hole by future Masters Champion Gay Brewer.
Bob joined the family business, Piedmont Engineering Corporation, in 1957 and served as President and CEO from 1965 until his retirement in 2002. He also served on the Board of Directors of Lance, Inc. from 1990 - 2008, and was Chairman of its Audit Committee.
Bob left an enormous impact on Charlotte as a civic leader. As President of the Charlotte Nature Museum, he led an effort to acquire property for Discovery Place and fund the original construction. He was a long time Treasurer of the Mecklenburg County Council of the Boy Scouts of America, which recognized him with its Silver Beaver award. He took on the responsibility of Central Scoring for the PGA's Kemper Open, one of Charlotte's first big league sporting events, with the capable assistance of several of his close friends. Bob was also on the Boards of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, the Arts and Science Council and the Sportsman's Club of Charlotte.
For more than 30 years, Bob was an active leader in the Christian community. He served on the vestry of Christ Episcopal Church, and as a Ruling Elder of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church. At the time of his death, he was an active member of St. Giles Presbyterian Church. He was also Founder and President of the Metrolina Prayer Network and Charlotte Awake, a city-wide intiative with an evangelical mission. Bob served on the Board of Directors of International Prayer Ministries, Leighton Ford Ministries, Youth Commission International and the National Lighthouse Council of Mission America. He also served on the Master Plan Committee for Community Outreach Ministries, a thriving inner city ministry. Since his retirement, Bob has pursued a call to be a friend and counsel to pastors in the Charlotte area.
Bob was adored by his wife, children, their spouses and his grandchildren. As a father, he excelled and taught his family many life lessons. Bob is survived by his wife, Mary Lance Sisk; his son, Robert V. Sisk, Jr.(Jess) of Advance, NC; three daughters: Mary Lance McGinn (Dan) of Marvin, NC, Lindsay Monaghan (Bob) of Raleigh, NC and Carolyn Williams (Jim) of Cumming, GA; eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Philip Van Every Sisk, deceased at age two.
A memorial celebration will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 17, at St. Giles Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service at a reception in the fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Giles Presbyterian Church, 2027 Emerywood Drive, Charlotte, NC 28211, or the Charlotte Awake Network, P.O. Box 472247, Charlotte, NC 28247-2247. Condolences may be sent to harryandbryantfuneralhome.com.

If anyone would like some help with grief I have found a WONDERFUL Christian group called Grief Share. It is accompanied by a workbook for you to do every day on your own. The class is 1&1/2 hrs long and the class lasts 12 weeks. To find a group go online. My worst grieving started 6 months after dad passed. The group has helped me so much. God Bless all of you, Jean Austin

MaryLance- We are praying for your grieving period to be short and may God comfort you with a Rejoicing Time period that is forever. Bob will be missed (especially as your intercessor) but I am confident that others will be recruited so that your ministry will continue even during this "valley". God loves you alot and so do we.

Mary Lance, Amanda and I love so much you and Bob. We are saddened by your loss, but Amanda reminded me that he can hold Philip once again. During this long and painful trial, you and Bob prevailed. You both honored Christ your Lord and made his name great through it all.

I am heartbroken that Amanda and I cannot come to the Celebration because I and two of the children have pneumonia, but our hearts are with you as they have been the last three weeks as each morning I awakened praying for fortitude and special moments of intimacy for you and Bob.

"O Holy Fire, burn bright in me, until Your face is all I see."

Much love and fond memories,
Gene, Amanda, Luke (5), Rachel (3), Ava-Grace (1), and our newest, a girl due April 17.

Mary Lance and Family
I did not have the honor of meeting Mr. Van Sisk, albeit I do have the pleasure of knowing Mary Lance. After reading his many accomplishments and sensing the influence he has had on not only his children, the community and probably anyone with whom he was in contact, I am positive his memory and the effect he has had on so many people will undoubtedly be long-lasting. A True Inspiration!

Almighty Father, eternal God, hear our prayers for Robert whom You have called from this life to Yourself. Grant him light, happiness, and peace. Let him pass in safety through the gates of death, and live forever with all Your saints in the light You promised to Abraham and to all his descendants in faith. Guard him from all harm and on that great day of resurrection and reward raise him up with all Your saints. Pardon his sins and give him eternal life in Your kingdom.

We offer our condolences
-Dino

When Ray and I received the news of Bob's death we felt a deep loss. Ray had worked for Bob the last 30 years
and our three boys, Keith, Kenny, and Kelly also worked a good many years.
Their remarks: Bob was a good man, A good boss, did many good things for
Charlotte and was a was Christian.
They loved working for Piedmont
Engineering and I Nadine, Ray's wife
loved baking sourdough bread for Bob because he was so appreciative and so
gracious. The last time I heard from
Bob was in Feb. 2006 when my grandson
Kevin passed away at the age of 28, I
remember how much just getting the
letter touched me.
Our heart and prayers go out to
all of the family, we love each of you.

and the boys

Mary Lance, believe me, seeing this is never easy and my prayers are with you and your family. I also believe we are never meant to fully understand how we will impact life. Bob, without a doubt, did so for me personally without regard and I've yet to fully appreciate. Whatever life difficulties I encounter, I will always draw on lessons learned from Bob to bring value into everyone's lives. God bless him and your famliy

"Buck", I was so saddened to see the notice in the paper today about Bobby. I remember you both so well from Myers Park High. What a great guy he was! I lost my husband, Dick, in November, 2008, so I can appreciate a little of what you are going through now. Please know that I am thinking of you and your family with heartfelt prayers. God bless you with his healing power during this difficult time.

Mary Lance, I was saddened by the news of Bobby's death. The two of you were great partners, and have made such a positive impact on the Christian community in Charlotte. Just the other day, I ran across an outline which you gave the participants in a Bible study class at Calvary Church. That outline is 24 years old, and I remember so well the blessing you were to me and those of us privileged to be in your class. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy to you and your family during this difficult time. May you find continuous joy in your memories of Bobby and the life you shared together.

My heart is heavy for your family, and you are in my prayers constantly. You taught me at a young age that being a Christian is "very cool" and I'll be forever in your debt.
