Roger F. Snyder
ALBEMARLE -- Mr. Snyder, passed away on Monday, May 30, 2005 at Carolinas Medical Center due to complications from heart surgery. He was a strong and respected community leader. He had served as mayor of Albemarle since 1991, and had previously served as mayor pro tem from 1983 until 1987. His tenure as mayor was the second longest in the history of the city. Mr. Snyder was named Stanly County Citizen of the Year in 2001. In 2004, the North Carolina Department of Transportation honored him by naming the section of NC Highway 24-27 inside the city limits of Albemarle, the 'Roger F. Snyder Highway.' Mr. Snyder was 71 years old.
Born in Flushing, New York, Mr. Snyder was the son of the late Edward John and Margaret O'Brien Snyder. He was reared in Massachusetts and graduated from Saint John's High School in Worcester, Massachusetts and the Lowell Textile Institute in Lowell, Massachusetts. After serving in the army from 1956 to 1958, he moved to North Carolina when his father relocated the family textile business, E.J. Snyder and Company, to Albemarle.

Mr. Snyder enjoyed gardening and loved the natural beauty of Stanly County. As mayor, one project he was unable to complete was the proposed City Greenway.
In lieu of flowers, the Snyder Family requests that gifts be made to the City of Albemarle Roger F. Snyder Greenway Fund, in memory of Roger. Gifts may be sent to the Bank of Stanly, P.O. Box 338, Albemarle, NC 28002.

Chris, Julie & Family

I was so saddened to learn of your father's passing. I also lost my Mom in 2003, I know how difficult this time is, just know that time does lessen the pain and bring the many happy memories back to you all. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Your dad was the best mayor Albemarle ever had and will not be forgotten.

I knew Roger from his work in Raleigh related to housing. I enjoyed every meeting where he was serving as chair....I looked forward to his quips, and generally unrestrained comments. I know very few folks as possionate as Roger, and I will miss being with him. Thanks for allowing him to come and work in the state capital.

My sympathies to Chris and Julie at the loss of their father and for their children at the loss of their grandfather. My memory from childhood of Mr. Snyder is that of a "larger-than-life" personality.

I appreciate all that he has done for my hometown.

Roger was one of the greatest guys I have ever met. His integrity was well known throughout the textile industry. I worked closely with him when I was an engineer in the 70's and early 80's. Sincere sympathy is extended to the family, especially Mike.

I knew Roger since 1963 when we were in Jaycees together. Roger has done much for many people and for this community that citizens are unaware of. I have nothing but praise for him and hope we all remember him for a long time.
