Charlotte, North Carolina - Saralyn R. Summer, 86, died on Jan. 1, 2024, in Charlotte, NC. She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Eleanor Rice, and by her husband of 66 years, James L. Summer.

Saralyn was born in Atlanta, GA, on Feb. 20, 1937. She graduated from Brown High School and subsequently trained as an X-ray technician at Emory University Hospital. She was also certified as an ultrasound technician and worked as an office administrator at Midlands Orthopedics, Columbia, SC until her retirement at age 70.

Married to an Air Force officer, she enjoyed being a military wife and made a home for her husband and daughters wherever they were stationed. Saralyn was an avid reader, a great Southern cook, a skillful gardener, and a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a faithful member of Christ Lutheran Church in Charlotte.

She is survived by daughters, Saralyn E. Summer of Atlanta, and Ellen Stensrud (John) of Charlotte; grandchildren LT Thor Stensrud, USN (Megan) of NAS Patuxent River, MD, and Saralyn Stensrud of Raleigh, NC; sister-in-law Barbara Green of Nashville, TN; and nephews Jim Green of Nashville and Bruce Green (Beth) of Dayton, OH.

Her family would like to thank all the staff at The Sanctuary at Stonehaven, House 1, for their loving, compassionate, and skillful care. In addition, the family appreciates greatly the tremendous medical, personal, and spiritual care provided by Saralyn's hospice team from VIA Health Partners.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, Jan.13, at 11:00 a.m. in Christ Chapel, with interment in Oak Ridge, TN, at a later date.
