Arthur Andersen Obituary

Arthur Edward Andersen III, 69, a longtime resident of Barrington, died July 31, 2006, in his home. He was born in the Chicago area and grew up on the family farm in the Cary countryside. He attended St. John's Military Academy in Milwaukee, Mercersburg Academy in Mercersburg, PA and Northwestern University in Evanston. Retired for a number of years, he was the treasurer of Arthur Andersen & Co., the international accounting, tax and consulting firm his grandfather founded in Chicago. Prior to joining Arthur Andersen, he was involved in the Chicago financial community, working for EF Hutton and with the Midwest Stock Exchange. In addition to being known and respected throughout the international financial and business community, Arthur was gracious philanthropist. Throughout his life, he was active in his local community and supportive of a number of institutions including, but not limited to: Alexian Brothers, Columbus Cuneo and Cabrini, Illinois Benedictine College, Mercersburg College, St. Norbert College, the Chicago Institute for Neurosurgery and Neurophysiology (CINN) and PHD. He was a friend and mentor to many and is survived by his wife, Joan, nee Raae; his children, Kristen Andersen, Scott (Nancy) Wahl, Arthur (Mary) Andersen IV, Michael (Lisa) Wahl, Kim (Joe) Holland and Karen Porter; and by his 14 grandchildren, William Pickering, Art V, Christopher, Nicholas and Elizabeth Andersen, Alexander and Andrew Porter, Kelly, Kate, Andrew, Alyssa and Moira Wahl, and Kirsten and Tyler Holland. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur II and Marion, nee Condy; and his sister, Carol Louise Andersen. Visitation Thursday 4 to 8 p.m. at the Davenport Family Funeral Home, 149 W. Main St. (Lake-Cook Rd.), Barrington. Funeral Service Friday 10 a.m. at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 647 Dundee Ave., Barrington. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery, Skokie. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mr. Andersen's name may be made to the Alexian Brothers Foundation, 3040 Salt Creek Ln., Arlington Heights, IL 60005. For information, 847-381-3411.

I will definitely miss Art. Not only was he my boss but a good friend to me and my children. He had a soft heart underneath the hard exterior.

I met Art while I was being treated for Leukemia at Alexian Brothers Medical Center. I will always remember his gentle spirit and caring words for me during and after my treatment. He would often call just to say 'Hello' and to make sure that I was feeling okay. Whenever I tried to talk about how he was feeling or anything pertaining to him, he somehow always managed to shift the focus back to me. I know he is resting in a better place now, but he will truly be missed.
