Caryn, my heart broke when I read about Dan today. I always used to email him on his birthday (January 17th) every year but this was the first year I forgot. I wish I could add more to this message but I am so sad that can't find the right words.

I cherish all of the exchanges of thoughts and opinions which Dan and I had together. His life was an exemplar of immense dedication and solid commitment to Jewish education and to the Reconstructionist movement.

I am a friend of Caryn's family of origin. I met Dan when I was 18, when he first started dating Caryn. Since that time, I had known Dan socially through being together at many family events, occasions and small trips. Dan always welcomed me as family, and we shared many laughs, fine wine and interesting conversation. I was once lucky enough to be invited on a small trip to Lakeside Michigan where I also brought my young daughter and her friend. At one point in the trip the girls wanted to watch a movie, however we were unable to get the media system to work. While the rest of us adults gave up rather quickly, Dan did not. He worked diligently for at least 90 minutes until he got the movie up and running for the girls, and they were so excited. These were young children whom he had not met before. Daniel did this quietly thinking no-one was watching, however I was. Although I always liked Dan, this small act of kindness endeared him to me forever. Often it is in the seemingly smallest acts of kindness that one see's how big a person really is. These are my experiences of Dan, and they are how I will always remember him. I will miss him dearly. My sincerest condolences are with Caryn and her sons and the entire family.

My sincere sympathies to Caryn and Dan's entire family. I worked with Dan back in the days of D'Ancona & Pflaum, and he was always such a pleasure to work with. Smart, thoughtful, and a good sense of humor too. May his memory be a blessing.

What an extraordinary person and what a devastating loss. I was close with Dan's mom and imagine she is there to welcome him in all her love and pride. Dan was an amazing person. Last year I came to know him more personally. I was working on a drash about the Akedah for my Reconstructionist shul, the SAJ in NYC (founded by Mordecai Kaplan in 1922) . Dan generously shared his love and understanding of both the Akedah and Rabbi Kaplan and provided pages from Rabbi Kaplan's writings about the Akedah that I could not have found on my own. I will never forget his kindness and mentoring. During the course of the year, hearing his talk about Rabbi Kaplan (part of SAJ's weekly Shabbat "tish" program) was a privilege. He was brilliant, knowledgeable, and incisive but also gentle and supportive; a true mensch. I know his memory will be for a blessing. His mother would be (and was!) so proud.

Baruch Dayan emet! What a blow for the family and for the community! We are so very, very sorry to hear of Dan´s passing. He was a great man, a great leader, and the linchpin of several communities. He will be sorely missed.
