Edward Galvin Obituary

Edward Patrick Galvin "Coach" age 88 passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family September 18, 2021. Born 2/6/33 in Chicago, Illinois to Irish Immigrants, the late Tom and Molly (nee Herlihy) Galvin. Brother of the late Mary (John) Wilkie, the late John (late Betty) Galvin and the late Thomas (Sarah) Galvin; Loving husband of Eileen, nee Day, for 62 years; Devoted and loving father of his six daughters – Peggy (Bill) O'Reilly, Maripat (Rick) Wooliver, Eileen (John) Healy, Kathy, (Rick) Dasko, Joanne (Joe) Siciliano and Tracy (Dan) Welsh; Cherished Grandfather of Ryann (Mike), Caitlin (Sean), Liam, Maggie, Shannon (Mike), Katie, Jack (Natalie), Kaileen, Eddie, Mary Kate, Kasey (Nick), Danni, Drew, Joey, Charlie, Danny, Molly and Maeve; Proud Great Grandfather of Liliana, Luca, Bennett, Frankie, Johnny, and Mikey.

Ed grew up on the west side of Chicago. He graduated from Presentation Grammar School in 1947 and St. Philip High School in 1951. Upon graduation he went on to college, on a full scholarship for basketball, at Loyola University, in New Orleans, where he received a BS in Physical Education. During Ed's college basketball career, he broke several records and was named as an All American. Ed served in the U.S. Army, Military Police from 1955-57. Following his years of service, he began teaching and coaching at St. Philip High School. In 1960, he took a teaching position at St. Rita's along with the position of Head Basketball Coach. In 1970, Ed became head Basketball Coach at Fenwick High School and was later named the Athletic Director. Ed had an accomplished playing and coaching career that led to his induction into many Halls of Fame – St. Rita High School Hall of Fame, Chicago Catholic League Hall of Fame, Loyola University Hall of Fame, as a player and, also, as a team member, State of Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, and Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame.

He was a great husband, and everyone knew that Eileen was the love of his life. He "loved" and was extremely proud of his daughters and sons-in-law and their accomplishments. Nothing made him happier than to be with them. Family gatherings were at the top of his fun list. He loved hearing of his grandchildren and great grandchildren's academic achievements and watching them at all their sports events. Ed was blessed with many caring cousins, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews. Acquaintances quickly became life-long friends. Golf was a big part of his life. He enjoyed the nineteenth hole almost as much as, or more than, the game itself. When people would ask if he would move to a smaller home, as the kids went out on their own, he would say, "Why would I move? I have the best neighbors anyone could ask for!" He dearly cared for all the young men he coached over the years. Many are still very close friends of his to this day. We will miss his singing of Irish tunes, telling of Irish jokes, his welcoming smile, and his quick Irish wit.

Just heard of Eddie´s passing. Deep condolences to Eileen and his family! Eddie helped me get my first teaching job at Fenwick. Spent many memorable times with him at Fenwick, Rosary and on the golf course. Indeed a great singer and story teller. He was the Czar at Village Links. A stand up guy!

I was sorry to hear about Ed.Even though I hadn't seen Ed in a couple of years I still remember that fun loving guy. Ed was a dear friend and a kind gentle man who had a wonderful sense of humor and a ready smile. I will always remember him as the leader of the pack, especially at Val Connoly's old watering hole. Ed, Jim Guzzo and I being young coaches had some great times together. We also had some great sing-a-longs in Val's back room. The Gaels have lost another fantastic guy. Jack Marcoline, Minonk, Il.

Although we did not know Edward personally, he was a presence in our family. Our grandparents were Joe and Hannah Moriarty of Caherciveen, County Kerry and Chicago's West Side. Joe and Hannah counted Tom and Molly Galvin among their good friends. Growing up, we heard Joe and Hannah speak often and proudly of the great successes of Tom and Molly's son "Eddie". Reading Edward's obituary made us proud, too, and grateful for the many gifts and accomplishments of Irish Catholics in America. We know Edward will be greeted and welcomed into heaven by Tom & Molly and Joe & Hannah and the whole company of our Irish ancestors. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

With love and sympathy,

"Uncle Eddie" was the best godfather a boy could have. He never missed my birthday or a visit on Christmas Eve. He touched my life in a profound way. His message was faith in God, love of family, loyalty to friends and good humor. Man was he funny. With great love to and prayers for the Galvin family.

Ed was truly a positive influence and shaper of hundreds of young mens´ lives for decades. He was a role model, mentor and provider of guidance to so many.
Ed Galvin defined what it meant to be a good man.
"May the angels lead him into Paradise and may the martyrs receive him at his arrival and take him to the holy city Jerusalem".
