Terry, I was thinking about you today and wondered if you were still alive. So, I searched the internet for about a half hour until I sadly found your obituary by referencing the CPD. We got separated as friends when I moved to Crystal Lake in '74, although you and Carol visited Mary and I at our home here. After that, we both drifted apart and into our own careers but I never really lost track of you in my mind. I thought that when I retired, which I did in 2002, I would track you down but just never worked up the steam to make it happen. I just thought that you would last forever I guess. Even with your passing, I'll never forget what fun we had as teenagers ... we laughed all the time and you were so funny with your comments on life. You and I and Bob Streff hitch-hiked all the way to Loyola Academy for three solid years without ever being late for class. We traveled with your parents to Eagle River, Wisconsin for vacation in 1958 and then you and I made that same trip by train again in 1960 ... one of the best trips ever. I remember when Mike got sick and died suddenly and how devastated you were at the time. You got your sense of humor from him. Terry, there are no friends like old friends and I have rarely been close to anyone during my life as we were to each other ... probably because we both lived on the same block. I was best man at your wedding to Carol in the chapel at St. Ignatius. I'll never forget when we visited you at Christmas and you turned on your tree. I'd never seen so many tree lights at one time ... the whole neighborhood lit up. One more thing. I remember your mom, she was such a sweetheart, and dad as clearly as if they were standing beside me here today. I'm so sorry that we never got the chance to visit one last time. I think I'll look for Streff now. Could I be all by myself???

Joe Shields lived a life that made a quiet but very substantial difference in the lives of many CPD officers. He led them thru some dark, stormy times. I'm so sorry for your grief right now, but our belief in the promises of Jesus gently tells us your Joe is now in the presence of the only One who loves him more than we all do. My prayers are for you,as you try to get used to a world without him now. His was a life well-led.
