I had the privilege of working with Peter while fulfilling my term as Shlichat Aliyah and Representative of the Jewish Agency in Chicago.
As a strong Zionist, Peter was very supportive of our work in Chicago. He always made himself available and made me feel welcome in Chicago- especially within the walls of the Jewish Federation.
I send my sincere condolences to the family, in particular to his daughter Shoshana, who I have met personally. May you all find comfort in the fond memories of Peter.

,
Sadly, A few minutes ago I learned off Peter's passing. I did not know Peter for many years and I did not get to work with him in the past.
My first encounter with Peter took place only a few weeks ago. However, this encounter was so meaningful for us at Melitz, and for me personally, it marked the beginning of a friendship that I hoped would be a long one.
Dear family, I mourn the loss of your loved one and share your sorrow.
My acquaintance with Peter began by Peter's response to an email. As the CEO of Melitz, I was busy promoting projects and initiatives in the field of Jewish Peoplehood in general and in the Hebrew language in particular. Doing so, several people advised us to contact Peter. And Indeed, in our first zoom meeting with Peter, we found a real Mensch with a genuine passion for Jewish Peoplehood and a person who loves the Hebrew language with all his heart. We did not have to explain to Peter too much about Melitz as an organization, Peter already knew all about Melitz. It was so inspiring when he told us about his work and the Peoplehood environment in Chicago. Peter offered to help us to get acquainted with more Hebrew Lovers in Chicago and to try and create new opportunities for Melitz. In the next couple of weeks, we had two more Zoom conversations with Peter. Peter signed up to join the "SFAT AM" program, our new online study group for Jewish educators from all over the world learning together all in Hebrew. Peter missed the first group meeting due to his trip to Israel for his daughter's wedding. We set to meet him in Israel but sadly did not at the end. We were comforted by the thought that we would be able to talk again on zoom and meet on the "Sfat Am" meetings. Unfortunately, this will not happen.
Just last Thursday not knowing he had passed away, I sent him a draft video clip of the "Sfat Am" meetings and asked for his comments before we finish editing the video. But to tell the truth, I really only wanted to keep in touch with him and maybe to show off a little. I wish he could have seen the clip and feel how significant the program was.
Shalom Peter, You were a friend to us even if it was only for a few weeks.
Thank you, Peter, for all. Melitz will find a way to mark your memory.

I met Peter in the fall of 1966 when we both entered the graduate program in political science at the U of C. He was one of the brightest students in our group. Unlike many in that category he did finish his PhD.
We became friends and for two or three years we shared an apartment at 5658 Drexel. For a while we lived with someone very active in the anti-War movement.
Over the years Peter became more and more involved with his Jewish identity, the Jewish community and Israel. As a professional he contributed much to the Federation and to Jewish demography.
Once we went together to a George Wallace rally in an arena in the Chicago Stock Yards. Two Jewish liberals from the UC; we were both frightened and moved by an experience that made us feel like being at a Nuremberg rally in the 1930s. An amazing shared experience.
Although we parted ways after leaving UC we kept in touch. The center and most important part of his life was his family--His wife Andrea, two daughters of whom he was most proud, and his grandchildren. He also had a strong bond with his sister and brother.
I was fortunate to meet his parents during a visit many years ago.
He was a wonderful, committed human being of the highest character. A great friend. A first rate intellectual. Always searching for the truth.
He touched my life; he influenced me.
God has blessed me having given me the opportunity to have known Peter.
May his wife and children and family find comfort in his memory.

Chagit and I sat with you and Andy just two weeks ago after your daughter's wedding. We had such a good time together. I cherish your memory and am proud to have called you a friend. Rest in peace. You did so much for others, for Israel and for the Jewish people. A hug to you Andy and to your whole family.

I had the pleasure of meeting Peter during my 8 years at JUF. He was always so jolly and always greeted me and was never too busy to ask how I was doing and that meant alot to me. He did not look down on anyone and always treated me with respect. To Peter, it didn't matter what position you held at JUF, you were just as important as anyone else. Dr. Peter B. Freidman, you can rest now. You will forever be remembered.
