William Osborne Obituary

William Harold Osborne Jr. was born in Chicago, IL April 10, 1927 to William Harold Osborne and Mildred Hornish Osborne. He died at home in Marco Island, FL Sept. 3, 2012. William (Bill) was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of over 55 years, June A. Osborne; his son, William H. Osborne III; and his sister Gladys Osborne Hall. Survivors include his daughters Elise (Ron) Wallace, of Lexington, KY and Karen Osborne Pope of Madison, WI; grandchildren Alaina Wallace (Kevin) Wedgworth, Tristan (Bevin) Wallace, Sierra Pope, Ian Pope; and special caregiver families Cris and Jeanne Tan and Albert and Evelyn Mentolaroc. Bill grew up in the Beverly neighborhood of Chicago, IL. He attended the Harvard School for Boys, briefly held the city swimming record in the backstroke and as a sub on the high school basketball team was sent in to score the winning basket in a city-wide tournament. After serving in the European theater during World War II and receiving an honorable discharge from the US Army Bill married June Adele Lennon, also of Chicago, and followed his sister Gladys to Lawrence College, Appleton, WI, studying on the GI Bill. He joined Phi Delta Theta fraternity and graduated with a degree in Economics in 1952. His first child Karen was born in Neenah, WI. Bill and June returned to the Chicago area and bought a house in Palatine, IL where Bill III and Elise were born, and then built a home in Inverness, IL where they lived and were active members of the community for many decades before moving briefly to Lake Barrington Shores and then Luther Village in Arlington Heights, IL. Bill worked in Chicago as an investment broker for A.G. Becker & Co. and then William Blair & Co. until his retirement. Bill and June were charter members of Christ Lutheran Church and later All Saints Lutheran Church, both in Palatine, IL. Bill was an avid sportsman and sports fan, enjoying sailing, skiing, horseback riding and playing on a community 16" softball team. Bill's passion was golf. As an avid golfer Bill was a member of many golf clubs, especially Inverness Golf Club. He played in 25 consecutive USGA ProAm tournaments and later enjoyed collecting early golf memorabilia as a member of the Golf Collectors Society. Following his father's tradition, Bill was a lifelong member of the Union League Club of Chicago and actively supported their Boys and Girls Club. Bill and June enjoyed decades of world travels, especially cruises, going to places like Alaska, Hawaii, and Greenland and had a memorable trip to attend the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. Education was important to Bill and he helped all his children and grandchildren with college expenses to get a good start in life. He taught us to value hard work and business integrity. In his later years, Bill moved to and resided in Marco Island where he attended Marco Island Lutheran Church and loved the Gulf view living, visiting the Everglades, shelling, the white sand beaches, golf and all the benefits of southwest Florida. Bill was a generous, kind and energetic father and grandfather and will be missed by his family, church and community. We celebrate his life with a memorial service at All Saints Lutheran Church, 630 S. Quentin Rd. Palatine, IL 60067, at 11 a.m. on Friday Sept. 14. Pastors Seth and Jenn Moland- Kovash will officiate. Visitation will be at the church prior to the service from 9:30 to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials to AVOW Hospice, 1095 Whipporwill Lane, Naples, FL 34105 or online [http://avowhospice.org/get-involved/donate/] or to All Saints Lutheran Church are appreciated.

Dick and I extend our sincere sympathy to everyone in Bill Osborne's family. We greatly admired your father and grandfather for the way he devoted his time, thought and many talents to providing for and caring for his family. You all were clearly very dear to him. With his death, we have lost a gentleman and a fine role model. As you mourn, know we share your loss.
