Dennis Frazier Obituary

DENNIS DALE FRAZIER SR. Dennis Dale Frazier Sr. went to be with our Lord August 25th, 2022. (The following was written in Dennis' own words) Dennis was born in Berkeley, California on December 11, 1942 to Wallace James Frazier & Elsie Clara (Castoro) Frazier. Dennis grew up in Brentwood, California on his grandfather's farm and orchard. His elementary and high school years were split between Castro Valley and San Jose, Ca., graduating from Willow Glen HS, class of 1960. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force from 1961-1965. On leave from military service, he met his future wife at Mary Anne Gardens in San Jose. Dennis was immediately captivated by her beauty and personality. Six months later, Dennis and Beverly Jean Supnet were married in November of 1963. With his military service completed, Dennis and Beverly started their family with the birth of Dennis Jr., followed by Russell and Stacey. After working for a few years, Dennis decided to attend college. While taking classes at San Jose Community College and later at Santa Clara University, Dennis worked several part-time jobs and eventually started a lawn service business. Dennis graduated from Santa Clara University Magna Cum Laude in political science. He then took a year-long internship in the CORO Foundation, one of only 24 candidates nationwide. He worked several month-long internships throughout the San Francisco area. It was exciting, educational, and a once in a lifetime adventure. Following CORO, Dennis finished a Master of Arts degree in Urban Studies at Occidental College. At CORO, Dennis was introduced to the California public sector labor movement, joining the OCEA in Santa Ana. For 9 years, he experienced labor relations from the union standpoint. Later, as a Labor Relations Specialist at UCLA, he learned management's side. He then moved to California State University, Chico as a Human Resources generalist and later became staff Human Resources Director/ Labor Relations designee. After 22 years at Chico State, Dennis retired at age 59 due to an unnecessary heart surgery which caused an aortic aneurysm. All through this ordeal, Dennis relied on the Lord to keep him focused and without fear. Seven years after retirement, he unretired for two years as CSU, Chico's interim Facilities Management Director. Dennis was a Christian and taught Sunday School for 1st and 2nd grade children for 2 decades. He also sang in the choir and participated in several men's Bible studies through which he made lifetime friends. Other interests included gardening, especially colorful flowers. His primary focus, however, was providing for his family. He often loved having group dinners at restaurants. Family was important to him; he always said that next to God, family comes first. He is survived by his still beautiful wife of 58 years; his sisters Kathy and Claire; his children Dennis Jr., Russell, and Stacey Asher (Dale); five grandchildren: Briana, Isaac, William, Hannah, and AnnaShea; three step-grandchildren: Amanda, Hayden and Andy; and eight great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Dennis' Life is scheduled on Thursday, September 8, 2022, 3pm, at Valley Christian Family Church, 3180 Rancho Rd., Redding, CA.

I first met Dennis at CSU, Chico when he worked in Human Resources and we became fast friends. As the Payroll Director at the time we both worked for Dr. Charles Adams and we worked as a team to help faculty and staff with Human Resources and Union Contract issues. Dennis was well-liked and respected. He was honest and direct and good mentor. After he retired, the University asked him to come back. Dennis had a big heart and stood up for the little guy. As a female manager without degree, Dennis recognized my many years of experience and told me not to let that stop me from moving up and he pushed for higher pay and direct reporting status to Dr. Adams. And he loved his family and his tractor.

I first met Dennis in 1973 when, fresh from graduating college, I was hired by the Orange County Employees Association (OCEA) to be Editor of the labor organization's monthly magazine for its then 11,000 county employee members. Over the next five plus years, I was privileged to work closely with Dennis, enjoy his friendship and get to know his wife, Beverly, and their kids. I consider Dennis one of the most influential people in my early professional life, and I valued the knowledge and advice he offered and the example he set. Dennis also had a great sense of humor and was just fun to hang out with, and always seemed to have a funny story to share. This was especially true when our close little band of OCEA colleagues would regularly gather locally for lunchtime camaraderie and to let off some collective steam from the intensity of OCEA's various labor relations activities.
Distance precludes me from being there in person for the Celebration of Dennis' Life, but please know I will be there in spirit.
My deepest condolences to Beverly and family. Dennis was a great man and I am so grateful to have known him as both a good friend and a valued colleague.
With sincere sympathy,

I am so sorry to hear of Dennis“ passing. I had the good fortune of running into Dennis several times at La Hacienda Restaurant recently - the last time the week before he died. When he stopped by our table, we reminisced about our time at Chico State. I very much enjoyed working with Dennis and was a recipient of his sage advice on several occasions when dealing with work issues. He was always calm and measured, and I appreciated his wry sense of humor. Sincerest condolences to his family. Rest in peace, Dennis. Pattie Hannemann Jenkins

Dear Beverly, My sincere sympathy to you and your entire family for the passing of your husband. What a beautiful obituary Dennis wrote. I was so stuck by, "next to family, God comes first." May God continue to help you and your family through this difficult time.(I didn't know Dennis, but his obituary was quite moving.)
