Leland Fillerup Obituary

LELAND M. FILLERUP, MD Leland McDonald Fillerup passed away quietly in his home on September 30th, 2013 of natural causes. He was a prominent obstetrician for 40 years in the Paradise/Chico area. Leland was born on September 7th, 1927 in Lovell, Wyoming to Albert and Grace Fillerup. He served his country as a Marine in World War II. He graduated from Brigham Young University and University of Southern California Medical School. Leland practiced medicine in Los Angeles and later completed a residency in obstetrics at White Memorial Hospital. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities. He loved his medical calling as a "baby doctor", and viewed every birth as a birthday party. Leland was married to his wife Ruelene for 61 years. They have six children, and two nieces and a nephew who became part of the family. Leland is survived by 22 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services will be held on Friday October 4, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with a viewing starting at 1:00 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Chico 4th Ward on Mariposa Avenue. Hi, I live in Redding and just learned of Drs passing. He delivered 2 of my kids. The first went fine no problems things went perfect. The 2nd being an real life and death emergency C Section delivery. Both myself and my 4th son would not have not survived had we been in any other Dr.'s hands I am sure. He did not wait to get me under to cut to get my smothered son back out of the tunnel to breathe. His heartbeat was 4 beats a minute. The umbilical cord was NOT wrapped around his neck like it so often happens. Something else was wrong. He put my bloody son in my mothers arms and told her to keep him warm throwing a baby blanket to her. She was a retired LVN there for the birth and he rushed back to me with his nurses giving me 2pints of packed cells of blood. I Thank God every day for Dr. FILLERUP'S skill in saving our lives. The world has lost a great Dr. And human being. I am so sorry for the loss to your family.

Dr. Fillerup was my mom's and grandmom's doctor. He was the Brother who baptized me in the LDS church. I have always respected and even loved him and his family for the strength he gave me to stand up for myself and be strong even though life does like to kick you down. He helped me see what a true loving father really was and to this day I think of him in my prayers. Thank you for living your life and letting me see what a truly generous and loving family you created. Good examples are hard to find

Dr Fillerup delivered my sister Kathy on September 28th 1967 she died 2 days later (exactly 46 years later) on September 30th, the day he died. My name is Melanie and the only reason I am alive right now is because Dr Fillerup knew Kathy wasn't going to live and did not tie my mothers tubes. Thank You Dr Fillerup! Melanie Denna-Lewis

I am so sorry to hear about Dr. Fillerup. He was a wonderful man that delivered all three of my children, 1980, 1983 & 1985. He was also my mothers doctor for years prior to him delivering my children. I absolutely loved Dr Fillerup! He was one of the nicest gentlemen I have ever met. So, blessed he delivered my children. My heart goes out to his family and close friends.

To the Fillerup family I am so sorry for you loss my prayers go out to you. When I was very young Dr Fillerup handled the adoption of my Daughter Sheri,he found her a wonderful set of parents in Lois and Harold Skillen. When our daughter turned 16 she wanted to get in contact with her birth Mother, (previously I had gone to Dr Fillerup and gave him permission to give out my information). He personally knew the Skillens because they were members of his church. Dr Fillerup got ahold of my mother (she had been a nurse at Feather River) and she got ahold of me. In 1983 my 2 other children got to meet their older sister. To this day we have a warm and loving relationship between Both familys. This was a blessing, Lois Skillen had given birth to 4 boys in hopes of having a daughter knowing that she should never gotten pregnant even once. Lois Skillen suffered from MS. A couple of years ago Lois passed away from her MS. I'm sure she will be standing in line with a multitude of other people to welcome Dr Fillerup and catch up on all the ones they left behind. Thank you Dr Fillerup you brought so much joy to all of us. And please say Hello to my mother Anita Ballou.

I was only 19 when I met Dr. Fillerup, I was expecting our first child. He was so wonderful to me. He had a great bedside manor. He was funny and excited about everyone of our children, he would come into the room and say, Were having a baby!" LIke it was his first. after delivery he would try to get me to name one of our children after him. He was a great Doctor and will be missed. He helped me throught alot and I enjoyed the Paradise Hospital also. Iam sorry for your loss, but you do know that he loved you- his family with all his heart!

I'm overwhelmed with sadness today. Dr. Fillerup was an amazing, sensitive, caring and funny man. Being pregnant at 19 I was terrified and maybe a bit ashamed about my situation. He always reassured me, never judged and made me feel comfortable. This was 26 years ago this past August. I thank God for putting me into Dr. Fillerup's hands. Not only did he deliver my daughter and direct me in other health issues but he saved my mother . We both loved and respected him very much. My sympathy and prayers go to his family today.
