BLOOMER – On Jan. 30, 2010, after a three month struggle with congestive heart failure, Don Nelson, an active energetic 92 year old, was called HOME.
Born Nov. 26, 1917, Don lived his entire life in the town of his birth, Bloomer. On June 5, 1941 he married Mary Jane Broeren, his wife of 68 years. With WW II underway, Don left his wife and young son to serve a four year stint in the U.S. Navy. He worked at the People's State Bank for 42 years, as well as serving many years on the Bloomer City Council and as the custodian at Our Saviors Lutheran Church.
After retirement Don pursued his passions full time. He continued to faithfully walk two miles every day. When weather permitted he could be found outside working on projects, or in his garden. His tomatoes were legendary. His joy was sharing the fruits of his labors. Don was always ready to lend a hand, mowing lawns and shoveling sidewalks for the widows in the neighborhood and being available to whomever needed help. He was a great friend to all. Don's life revolved around home and family. He was a man of character and integrity, and those who knew him best, respected him most. We will miss his quite strength and presence in our lives.
He is survived by: his wife, Mary of Bloomer; three sons, Bill (Lisa) Nelson of Hinckley Minn., Chuck (Marilyn) Nelson of Eau Claire, and Tom (Mimi) Nelson of Houlton; one sister, Florence "Tudy" Peterson of Amery; grandchildren, Lesley (fiancé Dan Bauer) Adams of Baldwin, David (Leslie) Nelson of Lake Elmo, Minn., Kris (Ed) Geissler of Wenzenbach, Germany, Laura (Craig) Paulson of St. Paul, Minn., Julie (Kurt) Krumenauer of Edina, Minn., Eric Nelson of Chicago, Ill., and David (fiancé Emily Flood) of Woodbury Minn.; ten great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, Nels and Emma (Hilson) Nelson; sisters: Norma Hart, Agnes Holleen, and Hazel Nelson; and brother, Richard Nelson.
Funeral services will be held at Our Savior's Lutheran Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010 with Paster Robert Hannemann officiating.
A visitation will be held at Olson Funeral Home from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010 and one hour prior to the service at the church.
