Hon. Dennis Stephen Helmick

Cincinnati - On Wednesday, October 31, 2018, Hon. Dennis Helmick left his earthly body for the peace of the heavens. He was born in Cincinnati to Edward and Mary Helmick. Dennis was a model of hard work and service, both to his family and our community. He contributed over 40 years of legal expertise to Cincinnati culminating in his calling of serving as a Common Pleas Judge for the last 12 years of his career. Dennis participated in Leadership Cincinnati, was a board member for the Cincinnati Bar Association, served as President of the UC College of Law Alumni Association, and was appointed by President Reagan to the Selective Service Board where he served over 20 years. Dennis is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years Bertha Garcia Helmick, his children Dr. Ryan Helmick (Christine) and Caroline Helmick McNally (Pete), and grandchildren Colin, Eva, and Alexandra. He will be deeply missed by his family, especially his siblings. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, November 5th at 9:30am at St. Rose Church. Visitation will be Sunday, November 4th from 3pm to 6pm at Geo. H. Rohde & Son Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. Xavier High School or Hospice of Cincinnati. Denny, I miss you so much there are many days I just long to be with you again. Soon. But I am trying to make the most of my time left here on earth. I am a judge now! I am sure you somehow arranged this. Thank you. I channel your calmness and try to keep up with all the appellate decisions. Our kids and grands are remarkable. I am very sorry to hear about your loss. Dennis was a fine gentleman and did a great job as a judge. My late Father Judge Harry McIlwain thought he was one of the best . I know he loved his family and was very proud of them . It seems he had a well lived life. Good memories.

Dear Bertie,

I truly am saddened at Dennis passing. As you know, I appeared before him many times. I found him to be willing to listen objectively to all parties, careful and complete in his research, thoughtful in his decision making and fair. He was everything a judge should be. Oh, Bertie! I am so, so very sorry to hear that Denny passed away! I've missed seeing him in our exercise group, as well as going out to lunch with both of you after we were done. I enjoyed working with Judge Helmick, especially in his role as a visiting judge. I had more of a chance to chat with him then than when he was on the municipal court bench or common pleas bench. He is gone too soon, and Im so sorry he had to suffer from such a malady as he had.

Dennis was a determined soldier, he would box until he had nothing left. Boxing gave him a sense of ownership of his body, like Parkinson's couldn't hold him down.
