Richard Eckhoff Obituary

ECKHOFF

Richard "Jump Key" Joseph Eckhoff, passed away on April 26, 2017 after a hard-fought battle with cancer at the age of 70 years. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Lynne (Wagner) Eckhoff; daughter and son, Kimberly and Nicholas; and granddaughter, Arianna. Richard was an only child, born in Cincinnati, Ohio on May 7, 1946 to Milton Eckhoff and Marie (Koetter) Eckhoff who both predeceased him. He met his wife in Europe while on a tour; they were married on June 16, 1973. They lived together in such places as California, Minnesota, and even Mackenbach, Germany. Together they enjoyed reading with a particular love for mysteries and watched hundreds of soccer games. They have been season ticket holders for DC United since the club started in 1996. Richard attended the University of Dayton and Golden Gate University where he obtained his MBA. He retired as a Captain from the United States Air Force in 1992. After his service, his second career took him to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency from which he retired in 2015. His steadfast dedication to his work and colleagues was seconded only by his dedication to his family. He remained hard-working even in retirement and brave in the face of cancer. Even during his final weeks, he always had to-do lists at hand and the well-being of his family in mind. A memorial service will be held at St Leo`s Church in Fairfax Virginia on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the USO (metro.uso.org) or to DC Scores (www.americascores.org), the official charitable partner of DC United.

I met Dick in 1983 when he, I, and a few officers were selected to implement the "Phase IV" computer enhancement program for the then Tactical Air Command, now Air Combat Command. We had a lot of travel and adventures for the next three years as we configured and installed computer systems throughout TAC. I transferred to Keesler AFB, MS in 1986, but we kept in touch via Christmas cards. On a visit to D.C. a few years back, after I retired and returned to the Langley area, we spent an afternoon with Dick and Lynn at their home in Alexandria.
I'm very sorry to hear just this week, via a Christmas card, that Dick had passed. Although he had told me of his cancer, he was still taken from us way too early. From one "Mole Holer" to another, I'll miss ya, Dick.

I knew Dick when he started at Reston as a computer operator. He told me he retired from the military and had just started his government career. One thing about Dick he was persistent in his career. Next he joined SAS and ended being my cube mate for about 8 years then my supervisor. He kept me entertained with countless stories about his huge family and of course about his children. My condolences to his family.

I am very saddened to learn of Dick's passing. He and I worked together at the National-Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA). He was always an upbeat and happy guy -- always fun to talk to and be around. He was also a man who impressed me by his thoughtfulness of other people that he knew and worked with. Although I never directly met any of his family, I could always tell from the way he spoke of them that he truly loved his wife and children. May God bless Dick and his entire family!
