Frankie Crane Poteat

Old Fort - Frankie Crane Poteat, 75, of Old Fort, passed away Saturday, June 9, 2012 at her residence in Old Fort. Born on June 26, 1936 in McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late Gudger Crane and Bertie Mae Parkins Morris.

Mrs. Poteat was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Old Fort. She retired as the Chief of Police for the city of Old Fort and was the first female Chief of Police in the State of North Carolina. She was also one of the first female police officers in the state. Mostly recently, she was a mediator for the McDowell County Court System. She was a member of the Board of Aldermans for the City of Old Fort.

She was a loving wife, "Moma" and "Mamaw".

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Roy D. Poteat; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles E. Poteat and Minnie Holland Poteat; and her step-mother, Ruth Crane.

She is survived by her three daughters, Theresa Carter of Charlotte, Pamela Poteat-Hall and her husband, Bobby of Nashville, and Suzy Poteat of Nebo; and grandchildren, Josh Briggs of Boone, and Serguey and Brandon Hall of Nashville.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 13, 2012 in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home in Marion with the Reverend Don Freshour and the Reverend Richard Stanley, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow the service in Old Fort City Cemetery.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:00-1:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Project EXCEL, through Bethel United Methodist Church, PO Box 1443, Old Fort, NC 28762.

Frankie was a wonderful person. I will and already do miss her so much. This world this town this family and all her friends is truely blessed to have known such a beautiful person. She loved people and her actions showed that. She was never fake and told you the truth even if it wasnt easy to hear or easy for her to say. And so funny i think i will miss her laugh and smile the most. God be with this family that Frankie loved so much and be with her friends and God be with this county because God she loved them ALL.
