Arden - Genevieve Dale Bryant died Friday, August 17, at Mission Hospital in Asheville, after a long illness. She was born in Mountain Park, Oklahoma, and grew up in Oklahoma City. She did both her undergraduate and graduate work at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. She was a professor of botany, emeritus, at Colorado State University, where she taught and did research for nearly twenty years.

After retirement in 1984, she became active with Literacy Volunteers of America, both as a literacy tutor and as a trainer of tutors. She was given the Kirkus Literacy Prize by the Kirkus Review in 1987. She was a skilled, insightful teacher, an unfailing advisor and mentor for her students, and a careful researcher.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Paul T. Bryant of Arden, NC, her daughter Elaine and husband David Smyth of Baton Rouge, LA, and her son Christopher Dale Bryant and wife Patti of DeLand, FL, as well as a brother, Glenn Dale and wife Vivian of Bartlesville, OK, and two sisters, Phyllis Dotson and husband Ray of Tulsa, OK, and JoAnne and husband John Teegarden of Taos, NM, brother in law Bob Williams, of Millville, CA, and many nieces and nephews and their children, whom she treasured. She was preceded in death by her parents, Otis and Eula Dale of Oklahoma City, and her sister Charlene Williams, of Millville, CA.

A gathering of remembrance for family and friends will be held at Ardenwoods Retirement Community, 2400 Appalachian Boulevard in Arden on Sunday, August 26, at 2 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the North Carolina Arboretum, 100 Frederick Law Olmsted Way, Asheville, NC 28806 (828-665-2492). She will be deeply missed.

Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family and the memorial register is available at grocefuneralhome.com.

Genny was a very special person who enriched our lives. She was generous, caring, smart, and could grow a mean cherry tomato! It was an honor to know her.
