Mildred Enloe

Shelby - Ms. Mildred Long Enloe, age 84 , finished her course and entered eternal rest on Saturday, May 28, 2016 at Wendover Hospice in Shelby, NC. She was born on March 20, 1932 in Buncombe County, NC and was the eldest child of the late Nathanial Howard and Pauline McMickens Long.

Mildred was a 1950 graduate of Stephens-Lee High School in Asheville, NC. She furthered her education by receiving a BS degree in Music and a Minor in English from Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD in 1954. Upon graduation from Morgan State, Mildred worked a short time in Murphy, NC before accepting a position in Shelby as an English teacher at Washington High School. She later became a music teacher and worked at a number of schools throughout Cleveland County. Her teaching career spanned over 40 years working with thousands of children throughout the county. Upon retiring from the school system, Mildred worked for many years lending a helping hand to her son, Kevin at Enloe Mortuary. She was dedicated and devoted to helping him in any capacity and enjoyed working with the families that were served.

Mildred was a member of Emma V. Kelly Temple #748, Eighth District, North Carolina State Association of the I.B.P.O.E. of W. She joined the temple in 1977 and was a very active member holding numerous positions and serving on different committees. On the local level she served as Daughter Ruler and Financial Secretary among other positions. She was a loyal member who was continually called upon over the state of North Carolina to conduct workshops and training sessions. In addition, she worked and traveled extensively throughout many cities where the state and national conventions were held and thoroughly loved doing so.

Mildred was a member of New Ellis Chapel Baptist Church in Shelby where formerly she served as a church pianist for over 40 years. As a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Mildred was a charter member of the Shelby Alumnae Chapter and played an active role for many years.

Two brothers, Chester Long, Sr. and Leroy Long (Carolyn) and a nephew, Chester Long, Jr. have also preceded her in death.

She is survived by one son, Kevin T. Enloe (Pamela) of Cherryville, NC; her grandchildren, Amanda who was her faithful and dedicated caretaker for the last years of her life and Brandon; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Thomas Long (Helen) of Asheville, NC; a special cousin, Mamie Jean Machen of Asheville and a host of nieces and nephews; great and great-great nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 6, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Shiloh Baptist Church, 914 Frederick St. Shelby. Burial will take place at Sunset Cemetery.The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM on Monday and other times from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM on Sunday, June 5th at 1527 Rhyne St. in Shelby. Friends and family may also express their condolences at the home of her cousin, Mamie Machen, 60 Buffalo St. in Asheville. Condolences can also be expressed online at www.enloes.net. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

Ms. Enloe was my music teacher at South Cleveland my 5th and 6th grade years.She was so good to us kids.She gave music from her whole heart not just part of it.
