Susan Weinerman

Asheville - Susan Weinerman passed away on April 17, 2018, following a long period of declining health. She was born in Newark, NJ on June 21, 1940. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ethel Katz Weinick, and her father, David Weinick, as well as her sister, Helene Silverman.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Lloyd, her daughter Lisa Horak, son-in-law Michael Horak of Asheville, and son Richard Weinerman, of Burnsville, MN. She leaves behind three beloved grandchildren, Molly Horak, Isabel Horak, and Brian Weinerman. She is survived by a brother-in-law, Ernest Weinerman, and several nieces and nephews and their spouses.

Susan graduated from Weequahic High School in Newark, NJ, and went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts from Boston University and a Masters degree in library science from Towson State University.

She lived in Baltimore for 40 years and moved to Asheville in 2004 to be closer to family.

Susan was a school librarian in Baltimore City Schools for many years, and was a passionate lover of reading. In addition, she was an antiques dealer specializing in English porcelain and vintage handkerchiefs. She loved needlepointing and created many beautiful rugs and wall hangings. She was part of a bridge group with several dear friends. She loved traveling, especially to summer music festivals in Santa Fe, NM and Charleston, SC. She loved the Asheville Symphony, the Asheville Chamber Music Society, and opera. She was a devoted champion of the underdog, and volunteered whenever she could to help those less fortunate.

I think of Susan with her dozens of books to be read, her joy of a good story and her ready smile. She cared so very much for her family and especially her dear grandchildren. She gave great joy to many people and cared for them all. I am grateful that she was in my life.

I'm currently sitting in bed at 5:21am, trying to get some sleep, but I can't stop thinking about the reality I now live in, in which my Grandma Susan is no longer present...at least in the physical form. I'm very fortunate to have been this amazing woman's grandson since she was the young age of 47. I felt like I had a second mother. She is quite possibly the most caring soul I've ever known, and I'm extremely blessed to have called her family. She taught me many important and valuable lessons in navigating life. Grandma Susan cooked with the best of them, and always appreciated a helping hand in the kitchen. A delightfully quirky and humorous woman, my grandma would often make me laugh while teaching me that it's okay to be a little weird. In essence, a lot of who I am as person was made possible through my grandmother. It was tough when our family scattered across the country after I turned 10, but visits were always warm and eventful. I'm glad my grandma left a positive impact on all of you. Her hospitality and kindness knew no bounds. Whether it was in her school library, at the soup kitchen, in the countless antique stores and emporiums, or in her day-to-day interactions with people...she brought a lot of light to the world. I'm very much looking forward to the memorial service in May. It will be a great celebration of life. I love you Grandma Susan. You are missed, but your spirit is quite present.

One experience with Susan that I will never forget occurred at the funeral of my father (George Wolfson). At one point she could see how upset I was and came over to me with arms opened wide. She gave me the best long, comforting hug and whispered, "I know. I know." My love and sincere condolences to Lloyd, Lisa, Richard and the entire family. I hope you will find comfort from memories, family and friends.
