Eileen F. Devaney died peacefully at the Mercy Center Friday, Dec. 31, 2021.
Born in the East End section of Wilkes-Barre, Jan. 17, 1927, she was the daughter of Edward F. and Helen Flosser Devaney.
Eileen was a graduate of St. Mary's High School and held degrees in music from Misericordia and Marywood Universities. Before teaching music in the Wilkes-Barre Area public schools for 25 years, she was the organist and music director at the former Holy Saviour Parish for several years. During that time, she was a member of numerous parish organizations. Following her retirement as a music teacher, she volunteered at the Mercy Hospital Gift Shop for more than 10 years. During her recent residence at St. Luke's Villa, she was a member of the Church of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception at the Parish of Our Lady of Fatima.
In addition to her parents, Eileen was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas E. Devaney; and her sisters, Mary Cavanaugh; Sister Jeanne Marie Devaney, RSM; and Joan M. Finn.
She is survived by her sister, Sister Anne Devaney, RSM, Dallas; and many nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved. They were very much devoted to her and were always a source of great pride.
In addition to her love of music, Eileen enjoyed extensive travel to many European countries and Canada and most of the contiguous states of the U.S. She was an avid reader, gardener and highly skilled bridge player.
Eileen's family is deeply grateful for the excellent care she received at the Mercy Center Nursing Unit.
Funeral services and burial will be private.

I wish I knew Ms. Devaney was still local because I would have loved to have shared my nice memories with her. To this day myself and a few friends who had Ms. Devaney as our music teacher at Dana street school back in the late 70s early '80s. She was a wonderful teacher and I would love to send my sincere condolences to her family. God speed.

This wonderful woman was my music teacher at Heights Elementary in the 80's. She was the most devoted teacher and always there for anyone who needed her. She is the reason I love music today. So sorry to her family for the loss of a very special woman. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless all of you!

Mrs Devaney was my music teacher many years ago when she taught at the Heights elementary school. I did not realize she was at Holy Savior too, where I attended as a child. And, many years later, as I worked as a nurse at Mercy hospital in Wilkes Barre, our paths crossed again. I have a love of music, all music, because of her. I remember how she had the music notes on the chalk board for Country Road, in her class, and at the end she let me try to play the notes on her piano- which I still remember to this day. Thank you Mrs Devaney. You are fondly remembered and will be missed.
