Terrence McMahon Obituary

Terry McMahon (Terrence A. McMahon III), 65, of Moosic, passed away peacefully at Allied Services Hospice Care on Thursday, May 31, 2018, after a brief stay. He was surrounded by many friends and family, along with his loving wife of 43 years, the former Jean Marie Runsky.

Born in Scranton and raised in Avoca, he was the son of the late Dr. Terrence and Joan Hoar McMahon.

Terry was a 1970 graduate of Scranton Preparatory School and a 1974 cum laude graduate of the University of Scranton, with a degree in accounting. He became a certified public accountant in 1977 and practiced until his retirement in 2014.

Starting his career at Peat, Marwick and Mitchell LLC, New York City, he returned to the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre area and worked with the accounting firm of Snyder and Clemente, Kingston. From there he partnered with James B. McDonough to form the firm of McDonough-McMahon, which later was to merge with Parente Randolph Orlando Carey & Associates, Scranton. He was a legacy principal with this firm for more than 30 years in both Scranton and Philadelphia. At present, it is known as Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, one of the largest accounting firms on the east coast. In addition, he briefly taught accounting at the University of Scranton and was CFO of Alperin Inc. for five years.

Terry was an outstanding basketball player and was awarded the first Robert M. Larkin Award at Scranton Prep for athletic excellence, leadership, responsibility and character. He was a lector for many years at Sacred Heart Church, now Nativity of our Lord Parish, Duryea. Terry was also very active in the Duryea Little League, mentoring many young players through his coaching and guidance, as well as coaching youth basketball at the Greater Pittston YMCA. He was also a past president of the former St. Mary's Assumption Athletic Association, Pittston.

A former member of the Country Club of Scranton, he enjoyed golfing until his children started playing numerous different sports themselves. He was always available to support their athletic endeavors.

A well-known Notre Dame and New York Giants fan, in recent years he became an avid reader of all things related to the Civil War. He also developed a love of cooking and became interested in various culinary techniques, much to his family's amusement.

Presently, he was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, Scranton.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are his two sons, Terrence A. IV and wife, Alexandra, Pittston; and Matthew and wife, Joan, Alexandria, Va.; and only daughter, Elizabeth Kaciubij and husband, Shawn, Pittsburgh. He also has four grandsons, whom he adored and who adored their Pappy. They are Trevor, Jeremy and Dylan Kaciubij and Patrick McMahon. In addition, three brothers, Dr. Thomas, Michael and Jimbo, and sister, Jane Palutis, survive, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 55 W. Wacker Drive, Suite 1150, Chicago, IL 60601, or the Avoca Jolly Boys, 717 Main St., Avoca, PA 18641.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Regional Hospital and Allied Hospice Care for their compassionate care.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Queen of the Apostles Parish, 715 Hawthorne St., Avoca, with the Rev. Phillip Sladicka, the Rev. Eugene Carr and the Rev. Francis Pauselli officiating.

Friends may call at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.

Interment will follow in Cathedral Cemetery, Oram Street, Scranton.

Arrangements are by Kiesinger Funeral Services Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea.

I am sad to hear that Terry is no longer physically with us. An amazing man, he will never be forgotten for any that were fortunate to walk in his path. He was my accounting teacher at University of Scranton and he helped me mold my career. All that were touched by him, we have been graced by Terry McMahon's role as our life teacher in many ways.

Sending my heartfelt condolences to Jeannie and the entire McMahon family! Terry was a great guy whom we so enjoyed as we grew up next door. I'll always remember his gregarious spirit, his athleticism, and that resonant voice! Know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers during this very sad time.

I send my deepest regrets that Terry passed at such an early age. I was so happy to read his obituary to see how many family members he touched and guided through this life experience. He was a great friend during our time together at "The Prep". Terry sat right in front of me (McM/McN) first year and we remained great friends the whole four years. My only regret is that because of the complexities of life we did not remain in touch over the ensuing years.
