Amy Laughlin Obituary

LAWRENCE- During her 12 year battle with breast cancer, Amy Caprice Pomeroy Laughlin of Lawrence inspired many people, especially women and their families fighting the disease. She died November 9, 2008, at home surrounded by her loving family. Born in Lawrence, Kansas, on June 17, 1968, Amy grew up in Topeka where she graduated from Topeka West High School in 1986 after living briefly in Lexington, KY, and Overland Park, KS. Her undergraduate years were spent at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, IA, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Musicology. She was a member of Delta Phi. She eventually continued her college education at The University of Kansas where she completed course work for a M.A. and Ph.D. in Musicology. Music was one of the loves of her life. She started playing the violin in third grade under the direction of Larry Harris, who persuaded her to switch to the viola in sixth grade. She played in the Topeka String Project and the Topeka West Strings. Her musical ability helped her acquire a college scholarship and led to performances with the Topeka and Lawrence Symphonies. Another love of Amys during her early years, were the Public TV programs of Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. She proudly displayed an autographed photo of Mr. Rogers in her college dorm room. She even received a card from Mr. Rogers when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. In her spare time, Amy loved to scrapbook with friends and also enjoyed needlework and reading. During her lifes journey, Amy was involved in Brownies and Girl Scouts for the benefit of daughters Brittany and Emily along with other young girls. Amy could often be spotted in the crowd of many athletic events cheering on her son Alex and his teammates in baseball, basketball, and football. A special respite for her and her family was the Pomeroy family cabin near Eagle Nest, New Mexico. She spent many vacations there, starting at the young age of six weeks. Her time spent at the cabin enjoying the beauty of the mountains and the companionship of her family was very special times. The philanthropic side of Amy was demonstrated through her ownership and management of Second Chance Childrens Store in downtown Lawrence. She showed her compassion for others as she assisted individuals and community organizations by donating childrens clothing for those in need. She was loved and respected by her customers and employees. She is survived by her devoted husband of 16 years, G.R., and three children, Brittany of Overland Park, Alex, and Emily of the home; her mother Carole Parmley McFarland and stepfather Jack McFarland; her father Dave Pomeroy and stepmother Cheryl Weber; two loving sisters, Josie Pomeroy and Holly Hoeffner, as well as Hollys husband Kirk and Amys nephew Brandon and nieces Allison and Kailee. She lovingly embraced Brittanys fianc Sean Terry, as well as looked forward to becoming a grandma to his children Austin and Samantha. She was preceded in death by her grandparents Robert and Helen Pomeroy. A Memorial Service for Amy will be held Friday, November 14, 2008, at 2:00 P.M. at the First Presbyterian Church in Lawrence. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to be sent to First Presbyterian Church Youth Fund and the KU Endowment attention of Jennifer Daly earmarked for cancer research. Arrangements are with Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory. E-Mail condolences may be sent at www.rumsey-yost.com Amy Caprice Pomeroy Laughlin

To the entire family: I have words at a time like this. But, I feel extremely honored to have known Amy in high school - and to have caught up with her at the reunion in 2006. Her bravery and optimism in the face of that 12 year battle that she fought is humbling and something we can all learn from. I feel horrible that she left us at such a young age. Her family remains in my thoughts and prayers!

"Sometimes it makes me sad though... I have to remind myself that some birds aren't meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice. But still, the place you live in is that much more gray and empty that they're gone...

...I guess I just miss my friend."

Goodbye, Amy. You have always been a fantastic friend, and you are missed very much.

What an amazing person Amy was. I went to Cornell College with her and was her roommate for two years, and she was one of the funniest people I had ever met! We shared so many good times together. I can't believe she is gone....my thoughts and prayers go out to your family.

I graduated from Topeka West with Amy. Though I didn't know her well, I was saddened to hear of her passing at such a young age. Her life as evidenced by her actions and gifts to the world was one that was was well-lived and a model for all of us.

I was so saddened to hear of Amy's battle with breast cancer. She and I and many other musician friends shared a wonderful trip to Europe together in high school. I remember her as an extremely kind and happy person with great music in her soul. My thoughts are with her family in this terrible loss.
Amy - I wish you "Sweet peace."

I almost never check the obituaries from work because the page takes so long to load. For some reason I felt compelled to check them today. My heart sank when I saw a familiar name of someone a year younger than myself. I haven't kept track of Amy since high school, and what a loss that is for me. She led a wonderful and meaningful life after having such a good time at Topeka West. It is absolutely not fair that you all have to face life without her at your side, but I have no doubt that she left you all with a wealth of happy memories that will last forever. May you find peace and strength in the comfort of family and friends.

G.R., kids, Carol, Holly and everyone,

I was so sad to hear about Amy. She fought a valliant fight and seemed to live to the highest that she could despite it all. I am grateful for the times we did have together. I know she is now well and one with our loving creator. I will keep you all in my prayers for peace and understanding. I believe she is not gone, only transformed and still present in spirit. We will all be with her again.

G.R.

I am saddened to hear of the loss of your beloved Amy. As you know I too suffered the same loss 14 years ago so I know first hand the feelings you are struggling with now. As time passes you will be able to concentrate more on the positive and good times which I am sure there were many. My prayers and the prayers of my family will be with you in this time of grieving and sorrow. I know she will live on in the hearts of you and your children (I know you had one but not sure if others had followed). May God comfort you all.
