Charles Fortenberry Obituary

Charles Nolan Fortenberry, Jr.

Jackson

Charles Nolan Fortenberry, Jr., age 74, died at his home in Jackson on November 15, 2014, of sudden cardiac arrest.

A man of many interests, possessed of encyclopedic knowledge, he loved meeting new friends and keeping in touch with family and old friends. He was an enthusiastic and eclectic baker, collector, correspondent, church-goer, football fan, gift-giver, golfer, music lover, news-follower, raconteur, reader, traveler, and volunteer. Born December 14, 1939, in Bryan, Texas, to the late Charles Nolan and the late Mae Edwards Fortenberry of Auburn, AL. Charles attended the former Oxford Elementary School on Jackson Avenue in Oxford, MS. Although he lived for brief periods in Texas and at the Devereux School in Devon, PA, he spent most of his life in Mississippi.

In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his younger brother Joseph Edwin Fortenberry, then of Washington, DC. He is survived by his sister-in-law Ashley Doherty of Washington, DC; niece Dorothy A. Fortenberry, "nephew-in-law" Colin M. Wambsgans, and great-niece Dorothy Ashley ("Lee") Wambsgans, all of Los Angeles, CA; trustees Karen C. and Robert S. Montjoy of Auburn, AL; and several cousins.

His funeral will be held at Galloway United Methodist Church in Jackson on Friday, December 5, with visitation at 10:00 a.m. and a service at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Galloway United Methodist Church of Jackson; the Smith Robertson Senior Center of Jackson; or the Friends of Mississippi State Hospital, Inc., of Whitfield, MS. I got a chance to know Charles some years ago, but had since lost contact. He was a brilliant, gentle soul, who could converse intelligently about a variety of topics. Truly, a unique and special person who enriched my life, as well as the lives of his many friends.

My sincere condolences to the family for the loss of your loved one. May prayers strengthen you and memories comfort you, and may our Lord Jesus Christ and God our Father, who loves us, comfort your hearts and "make you firm". (2 Thessalonians 2:16, 17)

Charles was a dear friend and correspondent in monthly letters covering topics from Ole Miss football to German history. He was an Opera fan and devotee of the D Day Museum in New Orleans on his trips with the Montjoys. I always enjoyed his cards and recitations of his adventures and our meetings at Choctaw Books. A brilliant mind.

Charles was always personable and well-informed. I hate to admit it, but I don't think I ever answered one of his, "Did you know...?" questions right. He did cause me to stop and think. He will be missed.

We are sending our love and sympathy to all of Charles's family at this time of great loss.
Surely,an angel got his wings on November 15, 2014.
Sincerely,

I met Charles through my employment and grew to really appreciate him. I never met a person who was more comfortable in his own skin than he was or who had any less pretense about him. I don't fully understand the doctrine of election, but I know the Book of Books says only the elect go to heaven. So Charles must be of the elect.
