Chatwin Jackson Obituary

Chatwin Mabry Jackson, Jr., attorney in Kosciusko, MS, died recently in Attala County. He was born in Kosciusko March 14, 1923, to Jessie Fair Fenwick Jackson and Chatwin Mabry Jackson.
Mr. Jackson graduated from the University of Mississippi where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta. He was awarded a juris doctorate from the University of Mississippi School of Law. He practiced law in Kosciusko for approximately 50 years serving as county attorney, district attorney and municipal judge. He worked toward establishing the Attala National Bank and served on the founding board of directors.
During World War II, he served the US Navy as a Naval Aviator. Stationed in the Pacific Theater, he flew amphibious aircraft, PB5Ys and PB4Y-2s, and was attached to Patrol Bombing Squadron 123 (VPB123) based on Okinawa. After the war, he served in the US Naval Reserve. He was a patron of the National Museum of Naval Aviation at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, FL.
Chatwin was a champion of social justice and nature preservation. Proudly patriotic, he had a fierce passion for political reform. He loved living close to nature and died in the place he loved most---the woods of Attala County.
Chatwin married Ann Howard Jackson, who preceded him in death.
He is survived by his children, Sara Cargill Jackson, Dena Fair Jackson Daly and husband, Barrett, Chatwin Mabry Jackson III and wife, Susan; his brother, John Fenwick Jackson and wife, Mary. His grandchildren are Jackson Howard Benvenutti, Barrett Jackson Daly, Chatwin Mabry Jackson IV, Paul Fenwick Jackson, Emma and Ryan Risinger. He leaves many devoted friends including Clinton Brown, Emma Mae Perteet and all the members of the coffee club.
His children invite his friends and relatives to a memorial reception Saturday, January 17, 2009, from 3 pm to 5 pm in the Delta Gamma Room of the Mary Ricks Thornton Cultural Center in Kosciusko, formerly First Presbyterian Church and Chatwin's childhood church.

Our thoughts, spirit and prayers are with you all. Dena Fair, Sara Cargill, and Chatwin, I don't know if the three of you will remember my sister and myself or not. We lived in the small house about 25 ft. behind your house, (we called it the mansion). We both used to baby sit the three of you a lot. We moved to Grenada MS in 1959 or 60, and your father visited with us several times in Grenada. We loved your father, your mother and the three of you. May God be with all of you in this time of morning.

I was a circuit court reporter for many years in MS 5th Circuit Dist., which includes Attala County, and Mr. Jackson was one of my favorite attorneys. He and one of my judges, Clarence E Morgan, Jr., were friends and each delighted in good-naturedly "complimenting" the other. I always enjoyed when Mr. Jackson was involved in a trial; one could certainly expect action. My thoughts and prayers have been with the family thru this long ordeal.

Chatty was an icon. I really miss drinking coffee with him and the 'City Drug Store' crowd. That's been nearly 40 years ago and I was just a kid. It just seems like yesterday. I'll bet Chatty is telling tales and drinking coffer with many of them now.
God bless you Chatwin Jackson...see you again some day.
