Cynthia Langston Obituary

Cynthia Anne Langston

Jackson

Cynthia Anne was the first of three children born to the late Joe Ray Langston and Dorothy Ann Langston of Booneville, Mississippi. She was born December 7, 1954. Cindy died peacefully in her sleep at her Jackson, Mississippi home on October 26, 2013.

"Cindy" is survived by her beloved sons, Casey Langston Lott (Amanda) and Robert Bryce Lott (Amanda) of Booneville, her mother, Dorothy Ann Langston of Booneville, her brothers, Joey Langston (Tracie) of Booneville, and Shane Langston (Rebecca) of Southlake, Texas. "Cin-Cin" was a grandmother to Cade Langston Lott (6), Cohen Bruce Lott (2), and Camden Lee Lott (6 months). Cindy is also survived by many loved nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles and cousins who will miss her very much.

During her life, Cindy was very accomplished. At age 16, she graduated with honors from Booneville High School (1972). In 1974, Cindy graduated from Mississippi State University, where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority, with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at the age of 19. She was awarded her Master of Science in Mathematics from the University of Mississippi in 1979 with a 3.9 GPA. Finally, Cindy graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Law with a Juris Doctorate degree in 1992. While in law school, Cindy served as a Casenote Writer for the Mississippi Law Journal. She actively practiced law for 21 years.

In addition to being an intelligent lady, Cindy was beautiful and active in community matters. In 1974, she was selected Booneville's Miss Hospitality and later, Miss Prentiss County. She was also named a "Top Ten Beauty" at Mississippi State University. She held the office of Booneville Junior Auxiliary President, was a member of the Booneville Junior Woman's Club and the Booneville Inter-Civic Club Council. My deepest condolences to the entire Langston family. To the children who may one day being looking back to learn about their mom, aunt or loved one, know this: Her smile could light up a room and everybody wanted to be around her. To me, there is little higher praise than that. She will be missed by all of us.

There are so many things which had and always will keep a special bond between Aunt Cin-Cin and I. Other than being my only blood-related aunt, Cin would be the 1st child, just like me and the last little girl in our bloodline before I came along. Since she had no little girls herself and since I was the oldest girl of the next generation, she gave me a very special ring, often reserved for parent-to-child, not aunt-to-niece, for my 16th bday, given to her by her father on her 16th. Rings are material and will not transcend with me into the next realm, but the very special love I know she had for me that drove her to want to give it to me will. Furthermore, we shared a lot of the same circles of friends independently, especially in Fondren (which is really one giant circle with several mini-circles often divided by age or occupation) where we have both left our mark. And like me, Que Sera was a centerpiece to her social life in the very tight-knit Fondren family (much like our family). Perhaps, we were both drawn to Fondren folk b/c we were both brought up under such strong family values. As Cindy inherited Nana's fierce loyalty to our family, I too have inherited the same from her. She always defended my name if anyone dared to mouth something negative about me within her earshot. I know this as our mutual friends have told me some pretty awesome and very touching stories. I knew that as long as Cin was around, I would always have backup. Regardless of the many silly and embarrassing things I did while growing up, Cin would never judge me and would always make me feel not just ok, but to be proud of who I am. In tribute to my beautiful and beloved aunt, I plan to spend her birthday (12/7) at Que Sera. I'm not going to make a big deal over this, but if anyone would want to join me for a toast, probably btw 7 and 9, you are of course welcome, as I know Cin wouldn't dare turn anyone down, especially for a get-together in her honor. In fact, what better way to pay tribute than to get family and friends together to smile and be merry regardless of the hard times. I love you, Aunt Cin-Cin. And I suppose I'll see you on the other side one of these days. Love, Co-Rae

I first met Cindy in 1993 when we worked together at Langston, Frazer, Dockins & Sweet. As the years passed, we were buddies in MTLA, co-counsel fighting together in some sticky litigation and moms who enjoyed sharing stories about our kids. I remember her hosting Rebecca's shower and being such a dear sister-in-law. I remember her wonderful laugh and the good times we had at MTLA trips and conventions. I remember when her family was going through a rough time and how fiercely loyal she was to her brothers. May you rest in peace my friend and may God bring comfort to those you left behind.

Time may heal all wounds, but it's not working yet. Today was not good. I couldn't tell this story at the eulogy. But, I have been thinking of my "Swimming Certificate" story that kinda defines my sister's love and compassion. I was 5, Joey 6, and Cin-Cin 9. We went to a swimming camp in Clinton for a week. At the end of the camp, the kids who "passed" got a certificate. Joey and Cindy got one. Amazingly ( actually a child psychologist these days would be all over the people who ran this program), I flunked and got no certificate. Took it pretty well. Sat on the bench in front of counter and cried like a 5 year old kid. Cin didn't miss a beat. Sat down, put her arm around me and explained that she had talked to the instructor and there was a mistake. I had passed. She handed me a certificate and said, "See, there's your name." Cin, I know you can hear me. I have a secret. I couldn't read but knew instantly whose name was on the certificate. I heard many stories at the funeral; some I had heard before and some were new. Many, many of Cindy's friends and family got the equivalent of a "Swimming Certificate" like me. That was my sister.

Cindy brought gifts to many lives and left us with fond memories. I first met Cindy at Northeast. We transferred to MSU and "roughed it" (no air conditioning) on 2nd floor Butler Hall. College memories: Cindy's mimics, style, laughter. Cindy standing over a stove in her pink pj's frying balogna for breakfast, spraying her hair in the car on way to the beach. Mostly I remember her uncanny timing of knowing when to offer words of kindness and encouragement.
Your family is in my prayers.
