Edith Hamil Obituary

Edith "Mama Hamil" Hamil

Madison

Mrs. Edith "Mama Hamil" Nell Reed Hamil, 85, was called home by her Lord on January 1, 2017 at her residence.

Funeral services are scheduled for 12 Noon, Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at Old Towne Community Church 220 W. Ridgeland Ave. Ridgeland, MS with interment in Natchez Trace Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the church Wednesday from 10 AM - 12 PM.

Edith lived as a Godly woman and loved her Savior dearly. She was known by all as "Mama Hamil". Edith shared her love through her food for decades. A meal was not simply a meal. It was a labor of love that she poured her heart into. Every dish was made with care and kindness. Though she was known for her food, her accomplishments stretched to business and politics.

A native of Conecuh County, AL, Edith moved to Jackson in 1966. She and her husband started a restaurant called Ossie's Barbecue.

The Hamil family moved to Madison in the early 70s and, in 1977, she and her husband founded Hamil's Restaurant—a nationally-recognized landmark of local cuisine. Ever the entrepreneur, she founded the Wonder Shop, a successful antique and resale shop that stood where Persnickety is today. She also started Red Barn Antiques on Highway 51.

Edith was a charter member of the Madison Women's Republican Party, and remained a leader in politics for many years.

Edith "Mama Hamil" will be remembered as a prayer warrior, a loving mother and a trailblazer, and she will be greatly missed.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Alfred E. Hamil. She is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Johnson; sons, Bob Allen Hamil (Jeanne), James Bailey Hamil (Connie) and John Paul Hamil (Becky); brothers, James W. Reed, John Reed (Anne), Phillip Reed (Jean), Oscar Reed (Amelia) and Louis Reed; grandchildren, Everette Johnson (Tiffany), Lee Johnson, Justin Hamil (Alix), Paige Hamil, Bailey Hamil, Robert Hamil and Lucy Hamil; great grandchildren, Belle Johnson and Grayson Reed Hamil and a host of nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to: Wesley Biblical Seminary 787 E. Northside Dr. Suite B Jackson, MS 39206.

Mama Hamil fed one with spiritual food, so much better than that she served in her restaurant. God will richly bless the memory of this dear departed saint. Bob and Veva Gilfoy-Saltillo,MS

To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weap, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.

Edith Nell Reed Hamil, my dear friend. An amazing and God fearing woman, she shared her wisdom and knowledge with me. I'm so thankful for her friendship. This friendship will resonate in my heart forever. "Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears. So Samuel went and lay down in his place."
