John Moffitt Obituary

Dr. John Ellis Moffitt, professor of pediatrics and senior associate dean in the School of Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, died December 6, 2007. Visitation is Monday, December 10 from 5-7 p.m. at Wright & Ferguson on Highland Colony Parkway in Madison. Funeral services will be at 2p.m. Tuesday December 11 at Galloway United Methodist Church in Jackson, Mississippi with visitation preceding the service. Visitation will begin at 12:45.
"This is a great loss for the University Medical Center and to the medical community at large. John was a wise and trusted advisor and friend to me. He will be missed by us all," said Dr. Daniel W. Jones, vice chancellor for health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine.
Dr. Owen B. Evans, chair of the Department of Pediatrics, called Moffitt "a friend to many, one of the most intelligent and caring physicians we've ever had at this institution."
"His dedication to medical education at all levels was unmatched," Evans said. "He also was a key member of the team who helped build the Department of Pediatrics.
"He served as pediatrics vice-chair for many years and was instrumental in helping make the Blair E. Batson Hospital what it is today. For a department chairman, there isn't anything more rewarding than watching your students succeed – I was always pleased to watch his career as he progressed from resident to full professor. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched."
A member of the UMC faculty for two decades, Moffitt served as associate vice chancellor for health affairs from 2003-07, associate dean for graduate medical education from 2000-2003, and director of the Division of Allergy and Immunology in the Department of Pediatrics from 1987-2002.
After graduating with honors and special distinction from Mississippi College, Moffitt earned his medical degree from the University of Mississippi Medical School. Here he completed his internship and residency, serving as chief resident and instructor in pediatrics from 1984-1985. He completed a two-year fellowship in allergy-immunology at the Medical College of Georgia in 1987, then returned to UMC, where he served as director of the pediatric residency program from 1990-1996.
The author or coauthor of numerous scientific publications and abstracts on childhood diseases, Moffitt was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, the Mississippi State Medical Association, the American College of Allergists, the Central Mississippi Pediatric Society, the American Academy of Allergy and Immunology and the American College of Allergy and Immunology.
John Moffitt was a devoted father, connoisseur of Jamaican food, and avid sports fan. He was a Green Bay Packers stock-holder and a disciple of the Boston Celtics. Though musically challenged, he was an enthusiastic Rolling Stones fan with periodic diversions to see the Who. It is rumored that he took his son David to the Who in concert on two occasions. Bragging rights of this magnitude clearly justified absence from school.
John Moffitt was beloved by all who knew him," said Dr. Helen R. Turner, UMC associate vice chancellor for academic affairs. "He never met a stranger; he enjoyed talking to all people and making them laugh. He especially loved students and residents and was a wonderful teacher.
Pediatric Allergy was his calling. Though he served children with common diseases such as asthma, he was a standout in his profession while battling afflictions of the immune system. As a teaching physician Dr Moffitt had the gift for translating incomprehensible concepts into working clinical knowledge for medical students and residents alike.
If medicine was his vocation, humor was his hobby. He could lighten the darkest moments with a word. He delivered pithy comments, biting wit, and bits of sophomoric humor with artistic skill. He enjoyed practical jokes, much to the chagrin of his colleagues and mentors alike. A smile was his hallmark.
He was preceded in death by his parents Drs. Nina and Ellis Moffitt. He grew up surrounded by steadfast love, unsurpassed intellect and keen wit. His life, passion for service, and his medical expertise reflect the labors of these remarkable parents.
Dr. Moffitt is survived by his wife Jennifer Lynn Smith Moffitt, their children, Kathleen Marie and David Ellis, faithful dogs Betty Lou and Sydney, his sister Dr. Ginny Crawford (Howell) and nephews Zach, Clay, and Ellis, and his aunt Ida Hollan Robinson of Wichita Falls, Texas. The family wishes to acknowledge the unfaltering presence in Dr. Moffitt's life by Rose Brent. Rose was like a mother to him.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Blair Batson Children's Hospital, Red Cross, Galloway Memorial Methodist Church or University of Southern Mississippi Foundation Student Health Service Account.

Jenny:

I am deeply sorry for your loss.

John interviewed me right before his promotion, and I still remember his goofy laugh during our interview. (Plus, he asked me if was a Packers' fan, and I told I could never be one b/c I was a 49ers fan...deep wounds there, you know.)

I always remember his smile whenever I ran into him in the hallways.

I will always be grateful for all of his efforts to make us all feel so welcome at the "U".

Please accept our family's condolences to yours.

I just learned of Dr. Moffitt's passing on last night. I was a long time patient of his, until I no longer had trouble with my asthma. Here I am some 15-17 odd years laters looking for best doctor I ever had because my asthma has come back. My mother encourageD me to look him up because she, too, knew he was excellent at his craft. Now, I am searching for a practicioner as congenial, caring, and concerned as Dr. John E. Moffitt.

I have just found out of Dr. Moffitt's death. When I was 4 years old, when nobody else gave me a chance at life, Dr. Moffitt diagnosed me with hypogammaglobulinemia. I always looked at him like the savior of my life with Gods help. I am so sorry of your loss. He will forever be missed by my whole family. I will always be so greatful to have had him in my life!!!

I just learned of Dr. Moffitt's death. I have deep sense of loss for someone who I have always felt to be a wonderful physician. John was a chief resident in Pediatrics when I was a medical student. I regretted not having worked with John when I elected to not complete my residency at UMC. He was one of the most easy going and competent physicians I have known. I will miss him, he was a great guy.

Over 20 years ago, during his residency, I met Dr Moffitt and he eventually became my immunologist. Dr Moffitt was a man that had significant impact on the world. He often inspired me and I still think about how much he cared about each and everyone of his patients. He will be greatly missed by many, but now he is taking care of God's patients...

Dearest "Henny",
You know I think of you, Kathleen, David, Betty Lou and Sydney every day. I cannot even imagine your grief. John is always in my memories of our early years at UMMC, as we were all growing up and testing our wings. Just remember, he taught us all (Hoyce, Honi, Hane, Henny and Racey) our working knowledge of spanish! I always have my arms around you today and for all the days ahead. I love each of you,

Jenny,
I am praying for you. My memories are filled with thoughts of John and his incredible sense of humor, his wonderful smile, and the joy he brought to everyone who met him. I have so enjoyed telling my husband stories of the silly and fun things we all saw John do. My prayers are that, with time, you, Kathleen, and David will be able to remember that smile and feel the joy again.
I can't even begin to imagine how hard it is right now. But I am praying for all of you. Thoughts of your family are with us every day.

The Moffitt family name was so important to so many folk in the Jackson area, starting with Dad & Mom. John Ellis was such a brilliant young man, so unassuming and such a precious person. We treasure our association with he and his family through the years and pray that God will be very close to you during this difficult time.

Dr. Moffit was my allergy/asthma doctor for over fourteen years. He made sure that I was well informed about asthma and that I was always well taken care of. He gave me the motivation to complete my BA in Political Science and to complete my Masters both with Honors. Although I was/is a struggling student living on a fixed income, Dr. Moffit would always treat me as if I was the President of the United States of America. He would always tell me that I was just going through a rocky season in my life, but I would soon prevail. The great city of Jackson, MS will mourn this great loss, but thanks GOD for sharing a man that was beautiful, intelligent, a saint and was dedicated to improving the quality of life of all his patients and all he came into contact with.

To all family of John Moffitt-
You are being continuously lifted up in prayer at this incredibly difficult time. John's parents lived next door to my grandparents for many years, and I grew to think of them as family. Such wonderful people! The connection continues through my brother, Scott Woods. He so cherished his friendship with John. It's quite obvious that John was held in highest regard for his brilliant mind and kind heart. Only God can provide the strength and comfort required for a time such as this. May He meet your every need abundantly!

TO THE MOFFITT FAMILY,

John was such a wonderfully passionate person. My medical school days were blessed by knowing him.

"That guy is a fanatic." This was my father's description of John when John wanted me to drive from north Mississippi to Jackson just to play an intramural basketball game. I was on vacation from school and that made no sense to my father. Dad just didn't understand the importance of such things to John! At times John really thought he was Dave Cowens(Boston Celtic legend). Why else would he name our Med Student team the "Septics"? I am sure he is already picking teams for the next game. So please John, save me a place on your team. Afterall, my dad did finally meet you and then he understood.
Your friend, Bill

My deepest sympathies to the Moffitt family. I trained as a psychiatry resident at UMC while John's mother, Nina, was on the faculty. She had an enormous influence on me as far as my growth as a person and physician. I knew John only in passing, but we all held him in high esteem and were in awe of his intelligence and stature as a clinician. May God grant each of you peace during this difficult and sad time.

To all of John's family:
My heart and prayers go out to all of you during this time of saddness. I met John many years ago when he was Associate Dean for GME and I was the resident coordinator for the Jackson VAMC. At our first meeting I felt like I had known him all my life. His love of people, his humor, and his radiantly smiling face were infectious. John's love for the residents and students was as endless as his desire to teach and mentor them. John's presence will be greatly missed.
