Maxine Meriweather Obituary

Maxine Meriweather

Columbus

Maxine Pennington Meriweather, 88, passed away peacefully on the evening of December 24, 2012, at Plantation Pointe Retirement Community in Columbus, Mississippi.

Mrs. Meriweather was born on March 17, 1924, in Greenwood, Mississippi. The second of two children born to Banks Banor and Virgie Crawford Pennington, Maxine lived most of her life in the Mississippi Delta. She married Ben Kittrell Meriweather Jr., also from Greenwood, MS., in 1947. Ben and Maxine were the proud and loving parents of 4 children, Ann M. Egger (Ed) of Greenville, Beverly M. Alexander of Mobile, AL, Ben K. Meriweather III (Brenda) of Tupelo, and Suzanne M. Bean (Mark) of Columbus. Grandchildren are Ed G. Egger Jr., Laura E. Buchberger, Ben K. Meriweather IV and Clayton R. Meriweather, and C. Meriweather Bean and M. Hudson Bean. Great grandchildren are J. Banks Egger, Ben. K. Meriweather V, and Ben C. Buchberger.

In 1962, Ben and Maxine moved their family from Greenwood to Cleveland, MS where Ben served as manager of Delta Electric Power Association. Maxine remained a full time mother, until 1971, when she became the secretary for the Department of Art at Delta State University (DSU) in Cleveland. Though her role as a secretary was highly valued, members of the DSU community knew her best as one who supported faculty and helped students adjust to life away from home. Art students and faculty initiated "Maxine Meriweather Day" in 1974 to honor her. She remained connected to many DSU professors and students until her death.

Maxine and Ben were active members of the First Baptist Church of Cleveland, MS where she taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, and Girls Auxiliary for many years. Leading her family through her strength and faith in God, one of Maxine's favorite Bible verses was Proverbs 3:5-6 " Trust in the Lord with all your heart; lean not toward your own understanding; acknowledge Him in all your ways and He will direct your path. "

In the community Maxine was a Girl Scout Leader, a member of the Junior Auxiliary of Greenwood, MS, an officer in the Woman's Club of Cleveland, MS and a volunteer worker at the Bolivar County Hospital.

Gentle in spirit, Maxine put others before herself and saw the good in everyone she knew. She leaves a legacy of faith, optimism, and love to her family and all those who knew her.

A graveside memorial service for Maxine's family was held in Cleveland on Thursday, December 27th. Memorials to honor Maxine P. Meriweather may be made to the Mississippi chapter of the Alzheimer's Association at 196 Charmant Drive, Suite 4, Ridgeland, MS 39157 or (www.alz.org/ms/ or 1-800-272-3900).

Mrs Meriweather was the Den Mother to the troop of students at the DSU art Department. A source of advice, motherly concern, and a bandaid if you needed it. She made each of us feel special. I was thrilled years ago when I had a show at the Art Dept and Mrs Meriweather walked in the door. could not have had a more special surprise. I have missed her for years, so sorry for the families loss of such a loving and kind lady. Sincerely, Bill Myers
