Rosia Crisler Obituary

Rosia Wade Crisler

Jackson, MS

Rosia Wade Crisler transitioned into eternal life on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at the Baptist Hospital. She will be missed by the many people whose lives she touched. Rosia Wade Crisler was a loving wife, devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister. She was an engaged citizen who enjoyed a distinguished professional life as a noted educator and participated largely in the civic life of her community, city and state. She had a passion for teaching and spent more than forty years as a classroom teacher at both secondary and postsecondary levels. She taught French, English and Literature. She spent the last years of her career at Hinds Community College, retiring in 2010. She was honored with the distinction of Professor Emeritus. Mrs. Crisler was an accomplished artist who wrote, directed and produced more than 50 theatrical productions as Founding Producing Director of the Daughters of Margaret and Le Metissage Productions. Her acting career spanned over three decades with most of her theatrical accomplishments occurring during her time with New Stage Theatre and on the national stage as a part of the supporting cast of the motion picture, Beulah Land (1980). As one of the most requested professional storytellers, she travelled locally and nationally with her one woman show, Transmissions: Stories that Warm the Heart. She was very civic minded and participated broadly in the civic life of her community. She was a founding member of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., Central Mississippi Chapter; the 27th President of Mary Church Terrell Literary Club, Inc., advisory board member of the Margaret Walker Alexander national Research Center, an active member of The Links, Inc., Vicksburg Chapter; the Mississippi State Federation of Women's Club and Youth Affiliates; and the Presidential Hills Homeowners Association. Spirtually guided, she joined the Mt. Wade Missionary Baptist Church early in her life and remained a faithful and active member until she joined her husband as a member of the White Oak United Methodist Church in Crystal Springs, MS. She immediately assumed active leadership roles as a Sunday School teacher and a choir member. Rosia and Johnny were married December 24, 1963 and celebrated their 50th anniversary last year on December 24, 2013. In addition to her husband of 50 years, Johnny, she leaves to cherish her life, three children: Johnny F. Crisler (Theresa); Marshand K. Crisler (Charlotte) and Rasheda L. McIntyre (Terron); one step-daughter: Cassandra Smith; nine grandchildren; one great grandson; two brothers, three sisters, two sisters-in-law and legions of close family and friends. A Family Hour is scheduled for Friday, May 2nd from 6pm to 8pm at Westhaven. The Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, May 3rd at New Jerusalem Church North Campus at 11:00 a.m. The family would like to send a special Thank You to Dr. Jones, Dr. Wade, Dr. Ley, Dr. Shumaker, Dr. Mehrani and the staff of Baptist Hospital. The services have been entrusted to Westhaven Funeral Home.

Mrs. Rosia Crisler was a woman of many talents, but one would not have known it by her humility. She was also an instructor who genuinely cared about her students' learning as well as their daily lives. I can at times still hear her voice in the conversations she would with the class. It was impossible not to have or gain an appreciation for language and the arts when Mrs. Crisler was the leading force. I love her, not "loved" (not a typo; love doesn't stop because someone moves on) for all that she has been and poured into my life

The world and this community knew you in many ways as a great educator, actress, writer, and one of the most influenentual women of our City. I am grateful that I knew of all of that but more importantly I knew you just as Ms. Rose Crisler, a great friend to my mom, Mrs. Flora Bell McQuitter and a friend and neighbor to our family.

Mrs. Chrisler was one of the most beautiful women of our time. Iwas in her dramatic arts class, when she taught at Utica Jr. College. it was because of her influence that I went on to write my very first stage play in Kansas City, Missouri, entitled, "The tale of a lynching". She was also influential in me becoming a spoken word artist and now I am writing my first book. Thank you Mrs. Chrisler. You will always be in my conversations, thoughts and heart. I love you and you will be missed.

I can remember my first night in her World Literature class. I submitted an assignment written in pencil and she immediately let me have it....But as time went on, we developed a great student-teacher rapport when she noticed that I was serious about what I was doing...I was so surprised to here this. My thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Chrisler and the Wade family...Still in shock but GOD makes no mistakes. May she Continue to Rest in Peace.

So sad to hear of the loss of a great woman, teacher, and mentor. I proclaimed her as one of my most caring and dedicated professors. I loved attending her classes because they were so animated, she always kept us wanting to come to her class. Thank you Mrs. Crisler for showing me the essence of a strong, educated, professional woman. My prayers for strength are with the family.

Rosia Lee, aunt Zilla spelled our first name the same. Mt. Wade will not be the same without your grace and presence. You will be greatly missed. Who will read our church history? Who will ensure that we will conduct and portray ourselves as the beautiful Christian Black women that we are? As young girls growing up in Mt. Wade we all esteemed to be as you. You were one of our best role models. Many of us in the Mt. Wade community shared your parents, Mr. Newt and Ms. Baby as our parents especially after the passing of our own. You will always have a special place in our hearts. Our hearts go out to both Beverly and Effie Mae as well and the rest of your family. ~ The Anderson Girls (Murlene, Janice, Rosetta, Thomisene, Edith, and Tolla)

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Wade and Crisler families. Sister Rosia was indeed an inspiration to me and many other young women that she mentored, encouraged, and supported. Whether with a kind word, advice, or just a smile; she always provided a "light" wherever she went and whatever she did. She will be greatly missed, but will live on through all of the many lives that she touched. With much love, Rhea Williams-Bishop and family

I attended Hinds Community College in 1994 and Mrs. Crisler was my Literature teacher. I always thought of her as being an extraordinary person, from the way she eloquently talked to the numerous different hats that she wore, each day. She was a truly special person that I will always consider her the epitome of what a strong, educated, loving, and hardworking woman is. She will be truly missed...RIP Mrs. Crisler and welcome to your new home in glory.

When I was advised that life had ended for my beautiful cousin Rosia, I was shocked and speechless. Since a child, I've always admired the lady like manner she carried herself. Not only was she beautiful, she was also smart, fun to be around, considerate, straight forward and very helpful to all. I know the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. - Central MS Chapter will certainly miss her as she assisted in so many ways to make the chapter one of the premier chapters. She always had a willing heart and spirit to assist the chapter. I will miss our morning spiritual conversations. We often talked about scriptures and God's mighty power living in us. Rosia's transition places her in a much better place for she is truly with the Lord. I will always love and miss her but will never forget her as a kind cousin.
