Sarah Elizabeth Favara

Itta Bena - Sarah Elizabeth Favara died peacefully January 3 at her daughter's home in Jackson, MS. Sarah was born in Charleston, MS to Charles Santo and Mary Giardina Cataldi from Sicily, Italy. Leland was her childhood home before marrying Joseph C. Favara, Sr. of Itta Bena in 1938. Together they were successful proprietors of the Southern Café for over sixty years.

Sarah was well known for her love of people and her unshakable faith in God. People sought her out for counsel and prayers during personal crises and the power of those prayers were said to have a direct impact on their lives.

Sarah was a devout Catholic and longtime member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Greenwood. She worked tirelessly with organizations supporting the sanctity of life and protection of children. Sarah was a long time member of Itta Bena Woman's Club serving as legislative chairman and was on the board of Leflore County School's Bi-Racial Committee.

Sarah was known for her beautifully written personal letters, poems and short stories and enjoyed oil painting. Many of those paintings hang still in family and friend's homes today.

Sarah is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Mary Giardina Cataldi, her brother, Johnny, sisters, Zena Hodge, and Rosalie Gardner, and son, Marcus Favara.

Sarah is survived by her sister, Lucille Baughman of Drew, children, Joe Favara (Patricia) of Greenwood, Sheila Rossi, (Tony) of Plano, Texas, Deborah Mahaffey of Tupelo, Lisa Luley (Michael) of Jackson,10 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Greenwood, MS Tuesday, Feb 12, 2019 at 12:00. Visitation: 11:00-12:00. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Immaculate Heart of Mary Church Fund, Greenwood, MS.
