Jason Walter Vaughn will begin Friday, May 18 with visitation of family and friends from 6-9 p.m. at the Gospel Lighthouse Pentecostal Church on Highway 25 in Tishomingo, MS. Visitation will continue on Saturday from 11 a.m. until service time. Funeral services will be Saturday, May 19 at 1 p.m. at the church with Rev. W.H. "Bill" Burcham officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in Iuka, MS with full military honors. Pallbearers will include service members of the U.S. Army and honorary pallbearers will include J. C. Cuadra, Casey Morrid, Justin Parsons, Jeremy Ledlow, Jason Cole and Randy Laird. Cutshall Funeral Home of Iuka, MS is entrusted with the arrangements. Sgt. Jason Vaughn was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division in Ft. Lewis, WA. He was serving his second tour of duty in Iraq with the original Stryker Brigade in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Jason was a personable young man. Never meeting a stranger, he remained staunchly loyal to his friends. Born on October 31, 1977 in Memphis, Shelby County, TN, Sgt. Jason Walter Vaughn is the son of Walter Glenn Vaughn and Llalanda RaNae (Smith) Vaughn. At 15 months of age, Jason and his family settled in Bolivia, South American, where he lived until he was almost 5 years old. Relocating to Colbert County, AL, Jason and his family lived there until 1990 when they moved to his father's hometown of Iuka, MS. Jason graduated from the Tishomingo County High School in Iuka in 1996. After high school graduation, Jason attended Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville and Mississippi State University in Starkville, Mississippi. He joined the U.S. Army in 2003 and was sent to Ft. Benning, GA, for Basic and Advanced Infantry Training (AIT). After training, Jason was assigned to the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division at Ft. Lewis, WA, near Tacoma. The brigade was the first to go to war with the Army's new Stryker wheeled infantry carriers. It was also the first to be built around a high-tech communications network that officials say gives commanders and troops a better understanding of the battlefield than ever before. Arriving at Ft. Lewis in October 2003, it was not long before he was shipped out to the conflict in Iraq. The brigade trained in Kuwait for three weeks in November 2003 and then spent about a month in Samarra in operations against insurgents who had taken over the central Iraqi city. In January 2004, the brigade moved up to Mosul, a northern city of 2 million residents and assumed an area that had previously been occupied by more than 20,000 U.S. troops. At various times, task forces of 800 or more soldiers were sent south for Shiite rebellions and also to provide security on convoy routes in and around Baghdad. Jason received a much-needed two-week leave in September 2004, and upon arriving home, he and girlfriend, Contessa "Tess" Williams, quickly married. After returning to the conflict in Iraq and serving out his time there, Jason, arrived back at Ft. Lewis, WA, in October 2004. He returned for a second tour of duty in Iraq on June 26, 2006. Jason is survived by his wife, Contessa W. Vaughn; and stepdaughter, Ashley Martin, both of Starkville, MS; his father and stepmother, Walter and Pat Vaughn of Iuka; his mother, RaNae Smith Vaughn of Iuka; his sister, Karisha V. Devlin and her husband, Dan of Edina, MO; one brother, Logan M. Vaughn and his wife, Holly of Iuka; and two stepsisters, Candance Smith of Iuka and Michel Witt of Southaven. November 6, 2014

Hi, my name is Madison Vaughn. I am a sneior at Winfield City High school and I am writing this for an assignmemt for my Government class. I selected Sgt. Jason W. Vaughn because we both share the same last name. Here is a little about me: I am 18 years old and I live in the state of Alabama. I will be graduating in May and I'm very excited about college and finally being able to start out on my own.
I've never lost anyone really close to me so I can't tell you that I know how it feels, but I am so thankful for Sgt. Jason W. Vaughn's sacrifice for our country along with all the other troops who have and continue to fight. If you would like to respond email @[email protected]

Well finally I will sign Sgt. Vaughn Guest book after some time after his passing. I found out when I was in afganistan during my 07-08 tour, and my heart was broken. I met Vaughn during my active duty time stationed in Fort. Lewis. I had gotten to the unit about a year before he did. I remember vaughn to be a very good man. We were always debating about the bible and other topics of that nature. I was always preaching to him, and everything I would tell him he already knew. He told me about his life story wich was an interesting one. He was my roommate for much of the time in Iraq. We also did alot of missions together while out there. I even have him on video as my TC during a mission we did in iraq. Just me and vaughn. WOW!!! To the family of Jason Vaughn, I hope the the best. I will remember Vaughn forever, and when I see him again in heaven we will put our debates to an end.

I found this guest book today, and it was the first time it sunk in what had happened. I was out here in this sandbox too; Though, I don't get to leave the wire much. I would have loved to see you out here somewhere. I know it's been years since we've seen eachother but there are few people on my mind more than you. It is such an honor to say we were friends. I know everyday you rolled out of the ECP you knew the possibilities, and you still manned up and did your job. I know wearing that dang gear all the time had to be the most uncomfortable 40 pounds of crap you could possibly imagine sporting in 140 degree weather. I mean we're from Iuka, when it gets 80 we wear shorts. We don't carry m-16's, kevlar, helmets, and long sleeves. Thank you for taking it upon yourself to protect the freedom so many take for granted.
I noticed Mrs. Bates had left some remarks for you. You think she will leave red marks through all my grammatical and spelling errors? lol, that would be funny. Also I wanted to say thanks for saving me from riding the bus to highschool by coming out of your way to pick me up, though I am pretty sure it was because my sister came too. I will miss you. And anytime I overhear words like bravery, honor, pride, duty, saccrifice, freedom or hero; I will always think about you.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Jason, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

It is still so hard for me to believe that Jason has left us. It means so much to me that I was one of the people that he thought enough of to come to see the last time he was home. We talked for over 3 hours about life, his family, the military, and God.He spoke candidly with my classes that day. I will always believe that Jason knew he was going to leave us. I also believe that God was preparing him as well as us for his departure. As much as we miss him, how blessed we are to have had him be a part of our lives. The people of this country owe him and you so much for his ultimate sacrifice. I will always remember him. As the song says,"Go rest high, son, your work on earth is done..."

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history…they pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

I didn't know SGT Vaughn, but I served with him in 5-20 Infantry during his first tour from Nov 2003 thru Nov 2004. I'm pretty sure he was among the best. God will continue to watch over him as he always has. May he find peace in heaven.

I was honored and privileged to ride with the Patriot Guard on in the motorcycle escort for Jason from Kossuth airport to Iuka. (I am the girl on the red chopper and owner of Thunder Roads Magazine.) My heart breaks for you, and I am praying that you find some measure of peace and comfort in the difficult days ahead. Though Jason was taken from us far too young, I know he is with God, and will be forever an American Hero. I pray that we never forget, or take for granted, those like Jason who fight so bravely so that we can remain a free nation. God's speed, Jason.

I graduated with Jason and I am also in the military (US NAVY). I am truly sorry for your loss. We have lost members with me and the feeling is horrible. I will miss him terribly even though I have not seen him since graduation, we were still friends. I will remember him as we laughed in school. GOD SPEED and have faith that time will heal.
