PAULA STEIN Obituary

Paula Stein, 89, of Memphis, passed away on April 4, 2015 at the Memphis Jewish Home. Born in Bedzin, Poland on February 2, 1926 to Yoel and Esther (Messerman) Bratt, she was a victim and witness of the Nazi atrocities of World War II. When the Nazis invaded Poland in 1939, they murdered her parents and six siblings. She survived after being held at the Mauthausen Concentration Camp. After her liberation in 1945, she met and married Sol Stein, of blessed memory, in the Displaced Persons Camp in Bari, Italy. They immigrated to Memphis in 1948, sponsored by her Aunt and Uncle, Jenny and Chaim Silverstein of Memphis. Here they rebuilt their lives and raised a family, dedicated to the Jewish traditions that Hitler set out to destroy. She is survived by her sons, Harry (Harriet) Stein of Monsey, New York, and Mike (Essie) Stein of Memphis, 10 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. Services were held at Baron Hirsch Cemetery, Monday, April 6, 2015. The family requests memorials be sent to the Margolin Hebrew Academy, 390 South White Station Road, Memphis, TN 38117.
