Jennifer Norton Obituary

Jennifer Wierwille Norton passed away Saturday, March 5, 2016. She was born in Toledo, Ohio, on Nov. 24, 1969, daughter of Richard Wierwille and Linda Markell Wierwille, of Wooster, Ohio.

Jen was a dedicated mother, daughter, partner and friend who taught us all how to be a better mortal. Jen had a lifetime commitment to education, both her own and others. Born in Toledo, she moved to Minnetonka, Minn. and eventually to Wooster, Ohio, where she graduated from high school as an accomplished violinist, dancer and swimmer. She was a graduate of Mt. Holyoke College, where she studied history and French and spent a year in France with the Sweet Briar College. She earned a Master's Degree in Public Policy from Georgetown University, and her teacher's certificate from the Upper Valley Education Institute.

Jen believed in the responsibility to serve and dedicated her professional life to preserving and enhancing the prospects of the next generation of children. Jen served as a Justice and Peace intern at the United Church of Christ Social Action office in Washington DC, soon after college. She worked as the grass roots advocacy director for the American Public Health Association in Washington, DC. She was health policy director for NH Governor Jeanne Shaheen, where she staffed the State's Kid's Cabinet. She served as the policy director for New Futures, a substance abuse treatment and prevention advocacy group, and worked with many partners across the state to build the Children's Behavioral Health Collaborative, among other roles and jobs.

She found her truest avocation when she taught third grade at Broken Ground School in Concord, after receiving her teaching certificate in 2013 while undergoing treatment for colon cancer. She lived graciously and with courage, conviction and hope, and had an uncanny ability to build community and trust. She was attentive to and aware of the needs of many, and in her words and actions encouraged us all to reach a bit higher. Neighbors and friends, colleagues in her public policy avocation, and her fellow teachers all agree that she left a legacy of community that will last, the effects of which are still rippling out.

She loved family most, and enjoyed nothing more than filling her house with family on any holiday, around a piano, playing violin, or watching her kids play their instruments. Water was a close second, and she was nowhere more comfortable than in the many lakes, rivers and oceans she swam in with her children and friends. She loved to hike, Nordic ski, bike, walk with friends, travel to new places, drive long distances, and was desperate not to miss any opportunity to learn something new, share adventure and love with her friends and her family. And she loved the feeling of the sun on her face. While hiking, walking, or skiing, friends and family would find themselves talking to themselves, as she had stopped to close her eyes and turn her face to the sun.

She is survived by her husband, Steve Norton and their children, Anders and Greta of Concord; her parents, Richard and Linda Wierwille; her brother, Michael Wierwille and his wife, Noey and their two kids, Calvin and Vivian; her brother, Jeremy Wierwille; her uncle, Bob Wierwille; cousins, Kelly Brown, Jamie Hanna and Janel Schwartz; her uncle, Fred Wierwille and his wife, Cindy; cousins, Becky Wierwille, Katie Roddy and Kale Wierwille; her uncle, Jim Markell and Bonnie Markell; cousin, Rebecca Markell; and her uncle and aunt Tom and Melea Markell.

Gifts in the memory of Jen may be made to the Jen Wierwille Norton Next Generation charitable fund at the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, nhcf.org.

A memorial service honoring her life will be held on Saturday, April 2, at 2 p.m. at South Church in Concord.

I am privileged that my path crossed with Jennifer several times over the years including our work with the NH Child Advocacy Network and the Children's Behavioral Health Collaborative. She was such a kind and genuine person who cared deeply about improving the lives of children. She was so much more than an advocate she was an inspiration. She had a way of making everyone feel special and important. I know her light will continue to shine bright lighting the path for many into eternity. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family, friends and colleagues. Thank you for sharing Jennifer with the rest of us! She will be remembered always!

Dear Steve, Anders, Greta, Dick and Linny, and the big family that surrounds Jen,

Obviously there are no words. I simply wanted to say, as I think you have no doubt received literally thousands of offerings of love, that I too am thinking of you. I had to unfortunately, watch the Clements go though this with Jeffrey so I know your suffering is deep and painful. But you all share the comfort of God and Jen's arrival in Heaven, and that is a wonderful thing.

Jen and Steve, you have both given of yourselves to an extent reflected in the outpouring of support from your family, community and others that have benefited and been touched by your kindness and selflessness.

I am astounded by Jen's ability to live life the way she did, under the circumstances of her health and the cancer. I have no doubt the desire to see every moment of Anders and Greta's lives was a supreme motivator in her ability to preserver. No matter, what Jen did shows her tremendous strength and love of life, family, the earth, beach, stars, trees, community and everything around her.

I remember going to the park with her. She shared with me, what not many know (I think) that you were donators to the playground equipment and surrounding area. That is what you are both about and that remains. I remember showing up at your house with the name plates at every seat and decorations. I will always admire her ability to keep things in a state of perfection where needed while in this warm, joyous chaos at the same time.

I will always have a particular memory that is so clear in my mind of Jen crying over the emotion that she felt over the desire and stress and love and financial practicalities of buying your house in Concord. I cannot forget the way you comforted her through this roller coaster moment as she sat next to you in the old apartment. You calmed her fears and provided the structure and realistic planning to fulfill her dreams.

A beautiful song comes to mind:
"Mama cut out pictures of houses for years
From "Better Homes and Garden" magazine
Plans were drawn and concrete poured
And nail by nail and board by board
Daddy gave life to mama's dream"
(Miranda Lambert, The House that Built Me)

I don't know what you will do, Steve. But I am sure that Jen prepared you and the kids and all the families you share. But preparation can only go so far. I know it breaks a part of you, perhaps all of you....I cannot begin to imagine your shoes so I am not going to try to put any emotions on paper that you might be feeling - it is for you to write.

While Jen has been sick a long time it has still shaken the folks that know you. The "gangs" in DC and Baltimore, my family in Miami, the Clements, everyone. She is too young to leave us.

Everyone sends their love and condolences and we all know how short that falls of what we would like to say to you.

Warmest of hugs to all.
Lily

There are no words that can adequately express how deeply saddened we are for the Wierwille and Norton families. If I could capture the essence of Jenny it would be in the freedom, the joy and beauty of a dance. That is how I will always visualize her in my mind and hold her in my heart. May you find comfort in the knowing that she now dances in God's pure light; joyously awaiting a time you will all be reunited again. With love Day
