Mike Whittier Obituary

Mike F. Whittier 60, of Dunbarton NH, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at the Concord Hospital.Born on July 2, 1956 in Grasmere, NH, he was the son of the late Fred P. Whittier II and Gertrude (Emerson) Whittier of Weare, NH. He graduated from Weare High School in 1974. I'm sure if you were to ask around you would hear stories of how Mikey was always ready for a good laugh. Like the time he thought it would be funny to streak through the School Gym wearing nothing but his sneakers!! He worked various jobs over the years but most recently at St. Paul's School in Concord, NH as the grounds keeper for the last 17+ years. Oh how the little Campus critters would wait for Mikeys' truck to come by every morning delivering treats. He was always good for an interesting story when you saw him around campus. This past Christmas he played Santa for the students. He had the best time making those kids laugh and was so proud to be part of the family of St. Pauls'. He truly loved everyone there and was grateful to be part of that wonderful facility. In 2013 he was honored to receive the Benjamin Rush Toland Memorial in recognition of being a valued member of the staff. When asked over the years if he had any kids, Mikey liked to answer that question by saying, " Ya, 500 of em' "...all those kids at St. Pauls' were Mikeys' kids. He loved each and every one of them. Mikey had a larger than life personality and was quite a character. He had a way of not only telling a story but an ability to draw you with his animated facial expressions and voice impersonations. His 3 Stooge's mixed with Monty Python sense of humor doesn't begin to describe this one of kind guy!! Truly hilarious.

Mikey loved being a part of things. He and his brother Pat spent many years enjoying tractor pulling. All kinds of tractor pulling. Big tractors, little tractors, it didn't matter. They enjoyed it all, together and with friends. He also loved auto racing with brothers Fred and Bruce. Boy, there was nothing better than going racing with the whole family. Mikey made sure that racecar was the shiniest one on that track, buffing it till the wee hours of the morning, proud as peacock to be there. To the first responders of Dunbarton that were there so quick on the scene, to the gifted surgeons, doctors and nurses of the ICU at the Concord Hospital, and to all of Mikeys many fantastic and loving friends, the family thanks you all from the bottom of our hearts. We knew as you all stood and cried with us as he passed away that you all knew how special this man was to our lives and how missed he will be everyday from here forward. We cannot express how grateful we are for all of the love and support you have given.

If there is a final lesson to be learned from the life of Mikey it would be this...always take time to love, take time to laugh (A lot!!) and take time to be grateful for what you have. Take time as he did to pass on a smile and think of others. He was the most selfless and humble person you could have ever met. His last gift was to become an organ donor. He will be missed greatly. Mikey was predeceased by two nephews, Edward Durham and Joel Durham Jr.

Members of his family include his siblings Ruthanne Swanson of Henniker, NH, Fred P. Whittier III and his wife Elizabeth of Show Low, AZ, Bruce Whittier and his wife Jennifer of Manchester, NH, and Pat Whittier and his wife Wijpkjen of Dunbarton, NH. His nephew Joel Durham Sr. Several nieces, Kristen Morse, Erika Folliard, Courtney McGee, and Lura Whittier. Hold on...he would also want to mention all those grand nephews and nieces...Angela Case, EJ Durham, Jacob Morse, Marisa Quinonez, Abby Morse, Jordan Case, JJ Folliard, and last but not least Uncle Monkeys little Braydi McGee!! I think that's all of them. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, March 25,2017 at French and Rising in Goffstown from 2pm to 6pm. Mikey will be laid to rest at the St. Paul Cemetery later in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the little kids and their families of CHAD at Dartmouth Hitchcock in Lebanon. Checks made payable to DHH-CHaD/Toy Wish List. Mail to : CHaD Community Relations Office 1 Medical Center Drive , Lebanon, NH 03756. For more information or to sign an online guestbook go to www.frenchandrising.com

Not sure what to say?

I had the great pleasure of hearing some of Mike's stories about his work and the people he knew and he was one of the most naturally gifted storytellers I have known--and a thoroughly nice guy. He will be missed.

This is the best obituary I have read in a long time! Mike's smile and story telling will be missed by all who had the opportunity to meet him. He was a very memorable guy! So sorry for your loss.

I was very saddened to hear about the loss of Mikey. He was a "celebrity" at the childcare center on the St. Paul's campus. Whenever the children heard the beeping of his truck backing up to collect the garbage they'd run over to the window to say "Hi Mikey!" Mikey would always come over and say hi back. One of his favorite phrases he would say to the kids before he left was "See you round like a donut!" He was such a nice guy and my thoughts and prayers are with his family. You will be greatly missed by everyone big and little at the childcare center but you will never be forgotten. <3

I remember you as a child, a friend of my brothers, Cliff and Dan. I was always so excited when you'd visit. You made me laugh and were so fun. As I grew you became part of the family, we all knew "Bubba". I became an adult and would ask Mom, Dan, Cliff, "How's Bubba?" I'm so sad I hadn't got to see you in recent years. But I remember. I remember your laugh, I remember your voice, and I remember how genuine you were. What a good friend. An amazing man. Taken too soon. Rest in peace my friend. <3

I am saddened to learn of Mike's passing. I encountered Mike most every day as I patrolled the St. Paul's School grounds, and he never failed to bring a smile to my face, as, I hope, I did for him. The SPS community is the lesser for his loss. Mike is in my prayers, as is his family.

We always looked forward to seeing you when you'd stop by the Tuck Shop (then the Café), with a big ole smile on your face and terrific story or a joke to share. It was a privilege to have known you; you were one of the kindest and most thoughtful people I will ever know! I know I'll keep seeing you around campus-driving by with a smile and a wave!! Mikey I am proud to say that you were my friend; you will be missed each and every day!

From all of us at Citizens Bank Mckee Square we are deeply sadden by this news. We also loved seeing Mike and listening to his stories whether it be about food, Arizona or about how he wanted to be a pirate. Mike brought so much positive energy from the moment he walked through the door. We will miss his laugh and joy. May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.
