Thomas Burke Obituary

Thomas J. Burke

Penacook, NH - Thomas Joseph Burke of Penacook, NH passed away on August 12, 2024 at the age of 73 after a yearlong battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family at the Granite VNA Hospice House in Concord. He did everything he possible could to have more time with those he loved so much. He fought hard and never complained once.

Tom was born in Concord, NH on July 3, 1951, the first child of the late Charles and Jacqueline (Tierney) Burke. He graduated from Bishop Brady High School in 1969, and attended Saint Anselm College.

He married his loving wife, Donna (Kelly) on July 20, 1974, and they just celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. He made her laugh everyday. Together, they raised three sons and had six grandchildren.

Tom retired from the New Hampshire State Police in 2002, at the rank of Sergeant. From there, he was the Director of Transportation for Merrimack Valley School District, and later became a bus driver after retiring from that role in 2020.

Outside of work, Tom was an active member of his community, serving on many boards and committees, such as ICB Basketball and Penacook Pride AAU Basketball. Most of all, he was very passionate about his coaching, coaching various sports and teams for 54 years. Recently, he coached the grandchild of one of his players. He truly loved working with his players, and shaped hundreds of lives through the years.

Tom was recently recognized as Concord Monitor's Home Town Hero, nominated by his special friend Debbie Drouin. He was also recently learned that he is to be inducted into the Merrimack Valley Hall of Fame, nominated by Kim Kenney, whom he affectionately called "Eunice". He received the Governors Volunteer Recognition Award in 1996. He was also named an honorary Kentucky Colonel for his community service.

Tom enjoyed spending time at his camp in Kennebunk, Maine. He loved spending time outside, just puttering around the yard. He also loved sitting on the porch with a good cigar and cocktail. Tom enjoyed his Tuesday morning "meetings" with Joe Raycraft and Dave Coffey, even though Coffey ate all the cookies. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved watching his grandson Matthew play football and baseball. All his grandchildren were a great source of joy for him.

Tom had a great sense of humor and never forgot a thing. If he had something on you and saw you years later, rest assured, he would remind you of it.

A hole has been left in the hearts of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing Tom. He truly was bigger than life, and he will be so very missed.

Tom is predeceased by his parents, Charles and Jacqueline, his sister Mary Welch, his in-laws Guy and Constance Kelly, his sisters-in-law Kathy Tobin and Debbie Kelly, and his brothers-in-law Tommy Kelly and James Kelly.

He is survived by his loving wife Donna, his three sons he loved dearly: Kevin Burke and wife Jewel, James Burke, and Christopher Burke and wife Erin. His grandchildren that he adored and that brought him so much joy: Matthew Burke, Lily Burke, Charles Burke, Marguerite Mary Burke, Marissa Bresnahan, and Cameryn LaSalle. His brothers Patrick Burke and Joseph Burke and wife Janet. His brothers-in-law Roy Tobin, Charlie Kelly, Guy Kelly and his wife Andrea, Shawn Kelly, and Robert Kelly and wife Angela. He also leaves behind many special nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to all his family and friends who visited him. He treasured every visit. A sincere thank you to his best friend, Paul Bunker who spent many hours by his bedside.

Thank you to Dr. Divenuti from Oncology and her providers for their excellent care. The very special nurses in the Infusion Room, who made the treatments more tolerable. Thank you to Dr. Betchart, Dr. Eckert for their compassionate care. A very special thank you to Granite VNA Hospice House for their unbelievable care. Tom was able to pass in a place that was so peaceful and loving. Every single employee and volunteer there is truly amazing.

Visiting hours will be held Monday August 19th from 11am to 2pm in the gymnasium at Merrimack Valley High School 106 Village St. Penacook NH 03303.

Funeral services will follow at 2pm. Burial will follow at Blossom Hill cemetery, Concord.

The Waters Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Tom's name to Granite VNA Hospice House, 30 Pillsbury St Concord NH 03301.

Tom was an irreplaceable part of his community and will be sorely missed. I used to run into him at Chiefs in Penacook and with his big booming voice he´d have something funny to say. Truly a wonderful person. I was very sad that I was away so I couldn´t make his services but I was there in spirit. Donna, you are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. I hope you know that your friends at EI are here for you at any time.

Tom Burke was truly one of a kind and everyone that knew him was so lucky. Tom roped me into being the Treasurer of the Merrimack Basketball League which I enjoyed for about 17 years. When Tom finished his many years of serving on the board it was decided we would send Tom and Donna away for some time together since his family had sacrificed so much while he was coaching the community children. We'll payback was hell, we sent them away to a dry (as in no booze)area of Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket. I can't remember which but what fun we had laughing about that. There were always so many laughs when ever Tom was involved.
Thank you Donna, Kevin, Jimmy and Christopher for sharing him with everyone. He was truly a wonderful man and will be missed by so many but never forgotten.

Donna and Family,
I am so sorry for your loss, really a loss for so many of us. Tom (Burkey) was an amazing man and gave so much to those that knew him. I loved watching my stepdaughter Sam (Robinson) Smith-Carbone play basketball, but a lot of that enjoyment came with watching Tom's ability to coach. He made each one of those girls feel special, he worked them hard, and he expected a lot from each of them and for that they loved and respected him back. He was a true mentor with a kind heart and a twinkle in his eyes. Ed, Sam and I were blessed to have known him, and all of you. His presence made the world a better place. Jules Robinson

Donna and Family,
I am so sorry to hear of Tom's passing. One of the "good ole' boys", gone way to soon.
My mother, Mary Holmes, was your neighbor for many years,
What a gift he was to her and we, her children. It was never a bother to him and without question. Maybe a look over or she needed something. I know she appreciated both of you. We were all so grateful, and our minds were at ease. Another one of Tom's generous acts of kindness, and a great neighbor. One of my sisters and I got to know him well. Always a smile on his face, and a wave from you and us! We will never forget him, a man of integrity and a true gentleman.
On behalf of The Holmes Family we offer our heartfelt condolences and sincere sympathy to all of you.
Rest peacefully Tom.

Tom's resume is filled with service to community including the State Police, MV Transportation and many boards, but his 54 years of coaching is what is close to my heart. Tom would drive me to and from practices or games in the early 80's in his classic bright yellow VW bug. I don't believe anyone could sit in the back seat behind his drivers seat set as far back as it could go (he was larger than life). It was a treat for me to assist him on the PCC board in the early 2000s and coach in the opposite Little League dugout from Tom in 2010-11. He touched thousands of lives with his life of service and his quick wit. I hope that his larger than life contributions to the community are a source of pride and comfort to his family and friends during this difficult time.

Kirk Laskey

August 15, 2024

My name is Kirk Laskey and I am the Commander of Post #31 in Penacook. Tom was a valued member of the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 31 in Penacook. He was always there to lend a hand when asked and always with a smile. I remember one day I was plowing the sidewalks for the city of Concord. And he was outside of his house having a cigar and just taking his time shoveling his driveway. I stopped and had a great conversation about my new job with the city and he wished me good luck and as always with a little smile and laugh threw conversation. He will be greatly missed. And his service to this community will be hard to replace. I dare say that I do not think he will ever be forgotten for generations to come. My condolences to his wife and family at this time.

I got to know Tom through my sister, Trisha Crete. After only a few conversations, he gave me some good stories about my nieces: Abby, Lucy and Julie Crete. I'll never forget those conversations. He left a deep impression on me that I translate into my own life's lesson. The lesson is this: when facing a formidable adversary in your life that tests human resilience, keep your wits about you and always play the game to the best of your ability. My deepest sympathy to his family and close friends.

I knew Tom back in the Seventies when the Burke home was a fun place to visit. Tom gave my my first driver's license in 1976 when he worked for the Motor Vehicle Department . Tom was a good hearted guy who had a way of keeping me on my toes with a twinkle in his eyes.
