Virginia Roberts Obituary

CONTOOCOOK – Virginia Grace Piper Roberts, 91, of Contoocook passed away Jan. 2, 2015, peacefully at home, surrounded by her family.
Virginia "Ginny" Roberts, daughter of Walter and Dorothy Piper, was born Aug. 31, 1923, in South Royalton, Vt. She was the second of seven children and was raised on the Broad Book Road family farm. Upon graduating from South Royalton High School, she enlisted in the Marine Corps during World War II, and was stationed in San Diego, Calif. Ginny was honorably discharged when the war ended having earned the rank of sergeant, and loved to tell the story of how she hitchhiked back to Vermont from California. Ginny married Woodbury Langdon Roberts in 1946 and they moved to Concord.
Ginny and Woody welcomed their children, David Langdon Roberts and Woodbury Charles Roberts, and moved the family to Contoocook in 1960. Ginny was happiest when her home was filled with friends, music and laughter. Ginny was a loving and generous friend. Everyone who entered their home left better for the visit, often with a yard sale treasure, homemade food, a berry bowl, dried flower arrangement or holiday wreath. Ginny and Woody hosted many yard sales, entertaining friends and family with late-night card games, sing-alongs and early-morning coffee on the patio.
Ginny left behind a loving family to be with her "piano player" of 67 years, Woody Roberts. Her brothers, Dean Piper, Norman Piper, and Malcolm Piper, also predeceased her. She will be greatly missed by her sisters, Elaine Tracy, Beverly "Babe" Prior and Hilda Burnham; her sons and their families, David Roberts and Karen Seleb, grandson Shane Roberts and his wife Sabrina, Woody and Trish Roberts of Hopkinton and their children, Adam Roberts and fiancée Danielle Sullivan of Durham, N.C., Anne Roberts of Hopkinton and a dear nephew, Fred Roberts and his wife Dale of Contoocook, grandnephews Darren and Carleton Roberts and their families. The Roberts family would like to thank the Concord VNA and Mary Jo Lux, as well as Ginny's friends and extended family members who made it possible for her to continue to live in her home.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Holt-Woodbury Funeral Home & Cremation service, Henniker.
Services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015, at 1 p.m. in Contoocook United Methodist Church, Contoocook.
Burial will be in spring in Contoocook Village Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Contoocook United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 356, Contoocook, NH 03229; the NH Audubon Society, Silk Farm Road, Concord, NH 03301; or a charity of one's choice.
