William Carr Obituary

William Carr

HENNIKER, NH - William (Bill) Carr died on July 31st at age 72 after a year-long battle with cancer. Bill was not yet ready to leave this World. He loved life and still had so much more to give and so much more life to live. Bill was still working at New England College when he became ill. He cared deeply for his co-workers there and the students he worked with. He desperately wanted to return to work at the College but was unable to due to his illness. Bill's greatest enjoyment in life was play-especially in the beautiful outdoors of New Hampshire. He was an avid golfer with his many golf buddies at Duston Country Club in Hopkinton. In Winter, he never missed the chance to go alpine skiing with his brother, ski friends, son and grandchildren, mostly at Mount Sunapee ski area, although his favorite ski areas were Cannon Mountain and Wildcat Mountain in Northern New Hampshire. His other outdoor passions included Mountain Biking, kayaking, cross country skiing and all season hiking. He was a member of the Algonquin Club in far Northern New Hampshire since 1992, one of the oldest, continuously operating hunting and fishing clubs in the U.S. He loved being up there both with his family and fellow club members for fishing weekends and to explore the 2nd Dartmouth College Land Grant and play endless games of Cribbage. Bill is survived by his wife of almost 31 years, Karin Carr, his only brother Robert Carr and his wife Carole Carr and his two daughters, Allie Walsh and her husband Jim Walsh and Kat Carr. His son Joshua Carr who shared Bill's passion for skiing, predeceased him. Bill also has 9 wonderful grandchildren who he enjoyed seeing at family gatherings. Bill will be remembered by his many, many friends and family as a one of a kind human being who radiated enthusiasm, optimism, a sense of humor and joy--all qualities that never deserted him during his illness. His absence will leave a hole in the lives of all who knew him. He will be sorely missed for a very long time. Bill and his family are very grateful for the care he received from the many professionals at Dartmouth Medical Center, Dartmouth Concord, and the Granite VNA Visiting nurses and home hospice Nurses, Aides and Social Worker.

A celebration of Bill Carr's life will be held at Duston Country Club in Hopkinton, NH on Friday, September 6th from 4:00 to 6:30 pm. All who knew Bill are welcome to attend. If you wish, please bring a golf ball with a message to Bill written on it. These will be displayed at the celebration and then donated to Duston Country Club for resale in their clubhouse. From one of Bill's favorite songs--

"I'm too old for the term but I'll use it anyway, I'll be a child of the wind till the end of my days…"

I knew Bill when I worked for his dad's company SEACOR in 1980, in Dover, New Hampshire. He was a fun, smart, and enthusiastic man, and a joy to know and to work with. Rest in peace, Bill.

My condolences to Bill's family and friends. Bill was an undeniable force of nature who lived life to the fullest. I think the best tribute to a life well-lived is how many people will remember us. Bill touched a lot of lives.

Bill was a rare and beautiful soul. We were colleagues at NEC. We´d pour over maps from the archives, he´d walk me through his adventures, and infused every conversation with his love for history and puns. I hope he finds a hot whiskey in heaven...

It's been 2 weeks now since I said goodbye to my oldest friend and true brother. It was at that time a sad but joyous afternoon spent in communal grief and yet still celebratory spirit with so many other friends, fellows and family of Bill's.

And yet, it seems daily I find myself missing him, wishing we'd had time to do this one last hike, however brief, to share a few moments in perfect solitude, one last camp weekend, mountain bike ride or skinny ski day.

You were one of the few, an original, my friend, and I will keep your memory alive while I can.

Bill was a dear friend and tutoring colleague. We shared books and lots of silliness. I will miss him. "Rest in Peace" does not fit Bill. Wherever he is, he will be finding out where he can hike and ski and pushing the envelope of the rules and expectations. Have a great adventure, Bill!

Bill carr was my tutor for four years at NEC from 2004-2008. He helped me with my papers and other stuff. The biggest thing he enjoyed the most with me was helping me with my senior thesis paper that I did on two Maine Islands. He was a great and awesome tutor. I am sorry for ur loss.

Bill was a wonderful academic advocate we spent hundred of hours together in the library working through my Senior Thesis and getting organized while attending NEC. He always encouraged me to lean into my dyslexia as a super power and challenged me to rethink/problem solved. I'll never forget him and what he did for me. I can still picture him with his classic pencil and big smile on his face. May he rest in power.

If I knew a student had limited time to get a paper done, I would not send them to Bill. But if I knew a student needed someone to listen to them, build their confidence, and be a genuine cheerleader for them, I would always send them to Bill. He radiated joy and always had time for a chat.
