Stephen Lange Obituary

Dr. Stephen John Lange, Jr. died peacefully on January 22, 2025. He was born in Wyandotte, Michigan in 1938 to Dr. Stephen John Lange and Bernice Clime Lange and moved to Savannah in 1943. He attended Charles Ellis Elementary School and graduated from Savannah High School in 1955.

He received his Bachelor of Arts in 1959 from Emory University, majoring in Chemistry. While an undergraduate at Emory he served as Pro Consul of the Beta Chi chapter of Sigma Chi and was one of seven members of his class selected for the D.V.S. Senior Honor Society.

He continued his education at the Emory University School of Medicine, receiving his medical degree in 1963. He trained at Grady Memorial Hospital and Emory University Hospital in Atlanta and interned at The University of Wisconsin at Madison. He was a Fellow-in-Anesthesiology in the American College of Anesthesiologists.

In August of 1962, Steve met the love of his life, Cathy McAfee, and they married four months later, on December 29, 1962. They enjoyed 62 years together raising a family, traveling, and playing golf. Their lives centered around each other and their three sons.

Steve served as Captain in the United States Air Force from 1967-1969. While stationed in Bitburg, West Germany, he made lifelong friends and toured Europe with Cathy and the kids.

After an honorable discharge, he returned to Savannah where he practiced Anesthesiology at Candler Hospital for 27 years. He accepted the great responsibility of his profession with wisdom and compassion.

A man of great integrity, intellect, generosity, and humor, he was an extraordinary role model to his children and grandchildren. Steve was a devoted father, and his three sons share wonderful memories of him teaching them golf, football, boating, and chess. Some of their fondest memories are of their many family vacations along the Eastern Seaboard, the Southwest, the Rocky Mountains, the Pacific Northwest, Canada, and California.

Steve had a passion for the game of golf and scored three holes-in-one! He was fortunate to have played Augusta National, St. Andrews, Murfield (Scotland), Murfield (Ohio), Carnoustie, Glen Eagles, Wade Hampton, and many others. Each year during The Masters Tournament, his family will fondly recall his excitement for the event, which he enjoyed for over 50 years.

Steve was also an avid photographer. His collection includes amazing portraits of the family, landscapes from his many family trips, and stunning images of the players and scenes at The Masters Tournament.

Steve was a member of the Savannah Golf Club, the German Heritage Society, the Cotillion Club, the Century Club, and the Oglethorpe Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife Cathy; his sons Stephen, John, and Scott; and his daughter-in-law Jessica. "SJ" will be dearly missed by his four grandchildren: Stephen IV, Scarlett, Scott Jr., and Natasha.

A visitation will be held on February 21st at Fox & Weeks funeral home at 7200 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, Georgia 31406 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donating to Hospice of Savannah or the Savannah Country Day School.

To those who were fortunate to know him, may his memory be a blessing.
