E. Gourieux Obituary

E. DeVerre Gourieux, M.D.

Evansville, Ind.

E. DeVerre Gourieux, of Evansville, Ind., and Bonita Springs, Fla., went home to be with the Lord for a highly anticipated reunion with his soulmate, Patricia (Patsy) on Monday, November 13, 2017, with his family by his side. He was 85.

DeVerre was born in Paducah, Ky., on August 8, 1932, to Edward and Myra Gourieux. He was a graduate of Bowling Green Business College where he met the girl of his dreams and future bride, Patsy White. They married and moved to Louisville, Ky., to start their life together. DeVerre put his accounting degree on the shelf to pursue a career in medicine, which would prove to be his calling for life as he used his gift of compassion and caring to serve so many. To support his education at University of Louisville Medical School, he played the church organ. In 1960, they moved to Evansville to set up what would become a forty-year family practice medicine career. He was actively involved in the medical community, a past president of the St. Mary's Hospital Medical staff and a multiple year trustee with the Indiana State Medical Association. There is rarely any time you mention his name in Evansville that someone does not say "he delivered me" or "he was our family doctor and we adored him"!

One of his most cherished career events however was the addition of his son, Eric, to his medical practice in 1992, where they were able to practice together for eight years until DeVerre's retirement, in 2000.

DeVerre and Patsy were married for 57 years before she died in September of 2011. They were actively engaged in their church, Eastern Heights Baptist Church, for many years. In their later years they attended Crossroads Christian Church and First Presbyterian Church in Bonita Springs.

DeVerre is survived and was loved and cherished by his three children, Lisa (Tom) Slade, of Newburgh, Ind., Dr. Eric (Kim) Gourieux, also of Newburgh, and Melanie (Harry) McDaniel, of Liberty, Ind. He was a spectacular Papaw to his nine grandchildren, Hunter (Kelsea) Slade, Emily (Joe) Manzo, Bryan (Chelsea) Slade, Daniel (Holly) Gourieux, Melissa (Corbin) Marshall, Evan Gourieux, Nicole Gourieux, Andrew (Carrie) Spohn and Molly Spohn. He routinely spent time with all the grandkids educating them on new apps and technology which he not only embraced, but mastered in the electronic age. He was also a very proud great-grandfather to Clara Marshall and Maren Manzo. Other survivors include his brother David (Pat) Gourieux, of Paducah.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 18, 2017, at Boone Funeral Home - A Family Tradition Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Ave., Evansville, IN 47715, with Pastor Patrick Garcia of Crossroads Christian Church officiating. Burial will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Newburgh.

Friends may visit from 2 to 7 p.m. on Friday, November 17, 2017, and from 10 a.m. until service time on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made to a favorite charity.

Dr.Gourieux was a wonderful physician, a kind man, and this world was a better place because of him. He took care of me and my parents from the time I was a little girl until he retired. Even after he retired, if he saw us in town, he always stopped to chat for a few minutes. My prayers are with his children and grandchildren that they will find comfort during this difficult time.

Due to a dog bite, I became a patient of Dr. Gourieux's the first week he was here. Shortly before he retired we were talking about how long I had been seeing him, so he got the records out and reminisced. I always enjoyed talking with him and had run into him in 2016 and got to talk a few minutes. He helped me get through a lifetime. He really cared about people.
My heartfelt condolences to all the family.

I'm so very sorry. Dr. Gourieux was a also our family doctor. He was always there for my parents and myself. His charming, southern accent and comforting voice was the best medicine I could get as a teenager. He and his staff were wonderful examples in what I look for in a doctor and their office now as an adult. No other doctor can measure up. Please know that my family will always have very kind and wonderful memories of him. He was a blessing.
