Frederick Eugene "Gene" Nellis, 71, of Henderson, Kentucky, passed away Friday, September 21, 2018 at his home.
Gene was born in Evansville, Indiana on August 9, 1947 to the late Frederick William and Marilyn Jane (Wiggers) Nellis. He was a 1965 graduate of Bosse High School where he played football and won the city championship. Gene was former president of the Jaycees in Newburgh. He was an avid Cardinals baseball fan and a member of St. John Evangelical United Church of Christ. Gene loved to joke with people and was a hard worker. He enjoyed coaching youth sports and watching his grandson, Jameson, play baseball.
Gene is survived by his wife of 17 years, Diane (Brown) Nellis of Henderson, KY; son, Jason Nellis (Kristen) of Evansville, IN; daughter, Lisa Talbot (Ron) of Naples, FL; step-son, Nick Shelton of Henderson, KY; brother, Stephen Nellis (Gayle) of Mount Vernon, IN; grandchildren, Kaydance Barnett and Jameson Nellis; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Ave., Evansville, IN 47711 with Pastor Mark Lowe officiating. Burial will follow at Springdale Cemetery in Sebree, Kentucky.
Friends may visit from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at Browning Funeral Home and again from 9:00 AM until service time on Wednesday.
