Larry Scheller Obituary

Larry Jerome Scheller

Evansville - Larry Jerome Scheller, 82, husband of Kathleen Ann Scheller, passed away Wednesday morning, January 22, 2020, at The Terrace at Solarbron in Evansville, Indiana. Born February 26, 1937, in Evansville, he was the son of the late Alexander Henry and Marie Theresa (Hillenbrand) Scheller.

Larry spent most of his life on Lincoln Avenue. He attended Reitz Memorial High School, where he played football. After graduating, Larry attended Evansville College two blocks down the street. After attaining his master's degree from the University of Evansville, he returned to Memorial High School, where he taught for 36 years.

His schooling started at Assumption Catholic Grade School. At Memorial High School, he played halfback for the varsity football team his sophomore through senior years. He was chosen co-captain of the team his senior year. He graduated in 1956.

Larry served six years in the Army National Guard. He worked as manager of UE's athletic department while earning his bachelor's degree from Evansville College. He graduated in 1963 and earned his master's degree in education from the University of Evansville in 1968.

Mr. Scheller joined the Reitz Memorial High School faculty in 1963. He taught biology, served as chairman of the science department, and was head coach of Memorial's freshman football team. He retired in 1999.

Larry was a devout Catholic. He was a member of Assumption Cathedral until his marriage to Kathleen in 1962, then was a parishioner of St. Theresa Church for 25 years. He attended St. Boniface Parish for his remaining years.

He was a soft-spoken, unassuming man who had a winning smile and loved to laugh. He enjoyed tennis, jogging, golf, dancing, playing games, and spending time with family and friends. He also spent a lot of his free time making crossword puzzles and trivia questions that allowed his biology students to earn extra credit.

Larry is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kathleen (Loehrlein) Scheller; daughter Karen Scheller (Mike Fierst) of Bloomington, Indiana; son Kenneth Scheller (Paulette Scheller) of Evansville; daughter Laura Bender (Nicholas Bender) of Cynthiana, Indiana; and grandchildren Hannah Scheller Carver, Josiah Scheller, Nicole Bender, Eva Bender, and Ryan Bender. Larry is also survived by sisters Shirley Linnebur of Byers, Colorado, and Norma Mayer of Evansville; brother Norman Scheller of Evansville; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Alexander and Marie Scheller, he was preceded in death by his brothers Alexander Scheller, Jr., Robert Scheller, and Dale Scheller, and sister, Rita Jackson, all of Evansville.

Visitation will be held at Ziemer Funeral Home, North Chapel, 6300 N First Avenue on Sunday, January 26, from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A Memorial service will begin at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue at St. Boniface Parish Church, 418 N. Wabash Avenue on Monday, January 27 from 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 AM with Fr. Ted Tempel, Fr. John Brosmer and Fr. Tom Kessler officiating. Entombment will be at St. Joseph Mausoleum, 2500 Mesker Park Drive, Evansville, 47720.

His family would like to thank his many loving caregivers at Solarbron.

Larry was a wonderful friend. I have so many memories from our get togethers with the supper club and square dancing and all the other outings. Larry was the one who was always calm and easygoing even though he might have thought there were razor blades in the pie.
May the reminders of his laughter carry you through these hard times.

Mr. Scheller got me. I had him as a freshman in high school for Biology. He was quiet and awesome. He let me do independent work. As a new kid to the area with no friends, this was the perfect way for me to learn. He was my friend. Later, I became a teacher, in part because of Mr. Scheller. I give extra to the new kids because I learned to do this from him. I wanted to be the teacher I needed. He was that person for me.

Mr Scheller was my high school biology teacher. He was such a gentle soul. If you asked a question he excitedly explained the material. He will always be fondly remembered. Prayers for his family.
