DEFIANCE - Delbert Duane Diemer, age 91 of Defiance, passed away peacefully at Glenn Park of Defiance on June 18, 2025. Delbert was born in New Bavaria, Ohio, to Sylvia and Florian Diemer. He was a graduate of Holgate High School where he was a standout baseball player. He was recruited to play for the Toledo Sox in 1953, an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. He returned home in 1954 to marry the love of his life, Jeannine Mehring, to whom he was married for 66 years.
Delbert is survived by sons, Terry (Tracey) Diemer of Toledo, Mark (Linda) Diemer of Grove City, Ohio, and Mitchell (Melissa) Diemer of Defiance, his daughter, Dawn Gordon, and son-in-law, Larry Burroughs, both of Defiance. Delbert is also survived by ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Delbert is preceded in death by his wife Jeannine (Mehring) Diemer, parents Florian and Sylvia Diemer, brother Mearl, daughter Cheryl Burroughs, and granddaughter Michele Diemer.
Delbert was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Defiance, where he was the high school Sunday School teacher for many years. He worked for General Motors and, at the time, was the youngest General Foreman they had employed. He worked for Johns Manville for 27 years. He was also a member of the National Guard Company 148th Infantry and received the rank of Corporal Grade E-4 in June 1956, and Sergeant Grade E-5 in July 1956. Delbert and Jeannine were co-owners of Powell Creek Campground from 1979-2016.
He was an all-around fix it man who loved to build, repair and tear things apart. He built the family home in Ayersville. His father Florian had the original vision for Powell Creek Campground and the two of them, along with Jeannine and their children, constructed the campground. It was built with the desire to share the natural surroundings on Hogback Road with all who came to be a part of the Powell Creek Community.
The family would like to thank Glenn Park Senior Living Community for their loving care of our father for the past five years. We are grateful to First Health Hospice of Toledo for their end-of-life care.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Defiance. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the church, with Rev. David Brobston officiating. Delbert will be laid to rest in Riverview Memory Gardens.
