FUNERAL HOME

Gerard Bassi Obituary

BASSI Gerard and Denise Gingras Bassi of Fairfield, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, December 25, 2007 from injuries sustained with an automobile accident in Florida. They were the loving parents to Melanie Bassi, Jennifer Calabrese and her husband, Anthony and Michelle Bassi, all of Fairfield. Gerard and Denise are also survived by his parents, Oscar and Nelly Muselino Bassi of Kings Park, N.Y.; her parents, Raymond and Linda Gingras McWilliams of Hudson, Fla.; his brother, Paul Bassi, and his wife, Gayle of East Setauket, N.Y.; her brothers, Larry and Kenny Gingras, both of Hudson, Fla.; her sister, Georgette DeFranco and her husband, Sal, of Spring Hills, Fla.; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. They were predeceased by Gerard's sister, Vivian Salerno. Gerard and Denise grew up in Uniondale, N. Y. where they met and were married 32 years ago. While raising their family, they had resided in Maryland and Mississippi before settling in Fairfield in 1984. With their over abundance of love for each other and those around them, they lived life to the fullest. They had a passion for sailing and traveling. They lived vicariously through their daughters, with whom they were so proud of and would often encourage them to reach for the stars. Aside from Gerard's commitment to his work as a civil engineer for Perini Corporation and Denise's loyalty to caring for children as a daycare provider, they were truly dedicated to each other and their family. Whether they were training for the N.Y.C. marathon or sailing the open seas, they worked together as a team. It is for this reason, it is only a blessing, that they are now together. We truly miss them. Calling hours are Friday (TODAY) from 5 to 9 p.m. in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road in Fairfield, Center. Their Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday at 11 a.m. DIRECTLY in Holy Family Church, 700 Old Stratfield Road, Fairfield. A private interment will be in Lawncroft Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to either: Swim Across the Sound c/o: St. Vincent's Foundation, 2800 Main Street, Bridgeport, CT 06606 -or- Fred's Team c/o: Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, 1275 York Ave., NY, NY 10065. To the Bassi Family:

We share in your sorrow over the loss of Denise & Jerry. This past boating season we had a lovely time on Amazing Grace at the annual dock party. They were lovely hosts and listened to our daughters CD of opera music. We shared homemade wine and stories with the group on their boat. They spoke highly of their daughters and you could see the love they had for each other.

They will be missed by more people than you know. How blessed we were to have them touch our lives even in its brief and casual moments.

God rest their souls together for eternity and may you find peace in the comfort of God's amazing grace.

Dear Jen, Anthony, Melanie & Michelle--

Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you now at this very difficult time. It is unfathomable to me the depths of your sadness and despair; it so difficult to lose one family member but to lose so many at one time, especially during the holiday season, is hard to grasp. Jen, please know that I will miss seeing you at P&S, you always had such a wonderful disposition even when the work was difficult. I enjoyed our times as part of the "Fun Bunch" and the party planning and shopping that went with it! Think of the good times and please know that you can call me at any time. God bless all of you and may you keep the wonderful memories close and help each other along the way.

Dear Melanie,

I just read about the horrible tragedy that has taken your parents so abruptly from your life. Please know my heart breaks for you and your sisters.

The many remembrances of your parents here are a testimony to the absolutely incredible people they were, who touched the lives of many who loved them in return.
You were blessed.

There are no words to ease your pain, but may the wonderful memories of your lives together give you peace to you and your sisters. God bless you all, Melanie.

Dear Melanie,Jen and Michelle-We were so saddened to hear of the loss of your parents. Denise took care of all four of our children, and I don't know what we would have done without her. My most wonderful memories of Denise, are coming to pick up the kids at the end of the day and sitting down with her, on the deck and just talking and laughing. We would walk around and look at her latest plantings, she was so proud of her gardens. Denise was one of those people that you meet, and feel that you have known them all your life, she was an instant friend. They both will be missed by so many, please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Much love,
Kevin and Chris Berardino and family

To the Bassi's family memebers. We are so sorry to learn of this horrible tragedy. For decades we have had the honor to serve Mr. Bassi every morning. So many customers come and go over the years but he was there every morning on his way to work as far back as we can remember, which is about 20 years. He was a pleasure so see each morning as he was always friendly and patient if it was busy. Sometimes he would run into a friend/neighbor and we could see how well liked and kind he was through his interactions with others. We can not imagine how difficult this time is for you. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this difficult time. He will be missed.

My heart broke when I read of the untimely death of Denise and Gerry. I knew Denise many years ago when her girls were very young and actually babysat for them a few times. Denise had such a wonderful sense of humor, a giving spirit and was always smiling or laughing. Even after all these years I remember that. I pray that the memories her family holds dear will help them through this difficult time. Peace be with all of you.

I had the pleasure of knowing your Dad professionally for many years. In a rough and tumble industry, he was a standout as a true professional and gentleman. His sense of irony and humor was always at the ready. I’ll always remember, and miss, his unique ability to bring a heated meeting back into perspective with a single, thoughtful and concise question (to which he already, of course, knew the answer). His contributions to Perini and the industry were incalculable. I know I will think of him often and miss his valued insights. Like so many people whose lives your parents have touched, people whom you may not even be aware of, please know that I share your loss and extend my deepest sympathies.

Dear Shelly, Melanie and Jen,
I have known necie since I was 1. I have so many memories with her. I can stil remember when I went to your house in the middle of the night because my mom was in labor. I can still picture necie telling all the kids its lunch and that afterwards we could watch a movie! Lynda, your grandma is also very special in my life. She was there with necie when i was there. Since we don't have any grandmas my little brother thought she was our grandma. I didn't know your dad Gerard too well but the times i did meet him he was soooo nice and i miss and love all of them so much. I'm praying for Lynda and you girls are in my prayers too. I LOVE YOU!

I lost my beloved grandmother on Christmas day back in 1980. To this day, I miss her. My only comfort then is the comfort I share with you now. God must have chosen these two people as His very special birthday gift. May you find peace in knowing that they share eternity with Him and all of the angels. Dear: Melanie, Jennifer, Michelle, Gaile, Paul, Nelly, Oscar

It is with deep sadness we learned of the untimely loss. I worked with Jerry for many years at Perini and have stayed in touch after I left Perini in the mid 90’s. Jerry and Denise touched many lives. They were ideal role models, mentors and unselfish individuals. They always gave so others could prosper.

Although no words can describe the loss, we offer our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family. May you find strength and comfort in the memories.

Dear Melanie, Jennifer and Michelle,

It has been along time since our family and your Mom and Dad were very close, I will never forget your mother, she was a gift from God, when Gary had his injuries in the hospital, he would only ask for her to play cards, and Denise went to the hospital to make him feel better, the picnics we had I will never forget. Words can not express the sorrow we all felt when we found out about the tragic accident. Just keep all your wonderful memories and it will help over time. We love you, and if you need anything we are here, just call. Love to all of you! Gyongyi, David, Michael and Marley Dorchinsky

Our sincere condolences to their all loved ones.

We came to know Denise and Gerry through the LISCA Regattas However, it was not until this past regatta, when our committee boat was hit, and they came to our home bearing gifts in order to lift our spirits, that began a new and warm friendship.

Each and every time we were with Denise and Gerry, they shared stories about family and it was obvious how important their family was to them.

We hope the outpouring of condolences you are receiving today will in some way help to lift your spirits just as they did for others.

Dear Bassi family, we have no connection with your family, but after seeing the death notice we had to offer our very deepest sympathy. We can't & won't pretend to even imagine what it must be like to lose two parents and two children at the same time. Our prayers are with you.

Neicy touched the lives of so many families by taking care of our children. She treated them like they were her own and pushed each of us to be better parents. She was kind, compassionate and a great friend. She would listen to our craziness at the end of a very long day, and some how have the patience to make us feel good. She was a gift to each of us and our children. We all witnessed what an amazing wife and mother she was. Gerard and Denise welcomed each of our families into their family. We were privileged to have had them as part of our lives. Shelly, Jenny Poo and Mel, we are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Always know that your parents profoundly touched the lives of many. You are in our prayers. All our love, the Gombos’

Dear Melanie, Jennifer and Shelly,
Our hearts go out to you in this unbelievable time. As you know your mother and father hold a very special place in our hearts. My boys loved all the time they spent with your parents at the house and on the boat.
We are thinking of you all and praying for Linda and Ray.
