Gery Habansky Obituary

HABANSKY Dr. Gery Habansky, DMD, age 66, of the Black Rock section of Bridgeport, passed away peacefully in his home while surrounded by his family on June 26, 2010. Gery was the devoted husband of 38 years to Janet Camelio Habansky, and loving father of six children including Dr. Rebecca Habansky- Porrino, and her husband, Marcus, of California, Jesse Habansky, Jay Habansky, Jill Habansky, Kate Habansky, and Emily Habansky, all of Black Rock. He will also be remembered by his brother, Dr. Alan Habansky, and his wife, Joan, of Indiana, members of the Camelio family, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, the late Attorney Frank and Margaret Chiota Habansky. Gery built a successful pediatric and adolescent dental practice in downtown Fairfield. He was a graduate of Fairfield Prep, College of the Holy Cross, University of Pennsylvania Dental School, and Eastman Institute of Oral Health at University of Rochester. His passions in life were loving his wife and family, his faith, establishing the Black Rock Food Pantry, and, of course, golf. Gery was a positive role model and mentor to his family and staff. He loved all close to him unconditionally. He will live on in the hearts and smiles of so many. A Memorial Mass celebrating his life will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. directly in St. Ann Church, 481 Brewster Street, in Bridgeport. All other services will be private. Gifts in Gery's memory may be directed to: the Black Rock Food Pantry, 25 Princeton Street, Bridgeport, CT 06605 (give online at www.BlackRockFoodPantry.com). Memories and Condolences

As one of Dr. Habansky's patients, I'll always remember him. I started going to his practice when I was 5, and now, at 23, I still go. I had such great experiences there that I never developed a fear of dentists, and I never wanted to switch away! Luckily he and his staff have been gracious enough to allow a 23-year-old "adolescent."

He was always so nice, courteous, friendly, funny, with a wonderful chair-side manner. My family looked forward to saying hi every time we went.

He also did an amazing job on my braces. As a kid, I was a real snaggletooth, and I remember being in middle school as he explained how difficult it would be to correct my teeth. When my braces came off in high school, he sent me a red rose and said I had a textbook-perfect correction. Now, I get complimented on my smile almost every day, and every time I do, I think of him and the amazing job he did. Those compliments are for him, not me.

Condolences to all his family and friends. Please know he touched and improved the lives of thousands of people you may never even meet. He lives on in his patients' memories as well as in yours.

The practice may be called "Kids First Dentistry" now, but to us and many other Fairfield families, it will always be known as "Dr. Habansky's." The place won't be the same without his ready smile and omnipresent bow tie.

To Doc Habansky's family and the wonderful staff at Kid's First -
My children have all been patients of Doc's for almost 20 years, all three of my children were blessed to have had him undertake their dental care, and my two daughters now have absolutely beautiful smiles - all thanks to Doc Gery. He was truly a gifted man. His ability to relate to both child and adult were second to none. His very persona was that of a man who really knew how lucky he was, but was always gracious for the many blessings he had. He will be deeply missed. No one will ever wear a bow tie like Doc. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of you in your time of loss. Carry him close in your hearts and he will live forever.

Dr. Habansky was my orthodontist while I was a student in middle school. In looking back in the past to today he did a phenomenal job on my teeth. He had a passion for what he did, had a knack for it and was very well respected in his field. As a person he was caring, gentle and made you feel at ease each and every time you were lying in the dentist's chair. I would like to extend my condolences to Dr. Habansky's wife, children and extended family during this difficult time.

My three childen Caitlin, John and Sassy loved visiting "their bow-tied Dentist" over the past 21 years. Dr Habansky always approached them on their level and then related to me on 'moms' level. Regular visits to the good Dr.'s office with his wonderful staff are beloved memories to my family.

Dear Janet and Family: We were so saddened this morning to learn from Joan & Gary Carpenter of Gery's passing. We remember him so fondly as a friend from Black Rock School and the St. Mary's neighborhood. We saw him most recently a year or two ago at Lake Candlewood where we now live, next door to the Carpenters. We are certain he is in the loving presence of his Lord and Savior and that we will enjoy his company one day. God bless your family and all the friends who will be missing Gery. I speak for myself, my wife, daughter, grandchildren: Emily, and triplets Conor, Sophia and Sarah, when I say that Dr. Habansky was a terrific
dentist to the children and a great friend of mine in the short years that I have gotten to know him when doing what he asked of me while working for his dream of a Food Pantry in Black Rock as well as with him in the special project we had as a group of 8 in Bible study . He was a gentle man, a man who just loved asking difficult questions, and as a man who, when he extended a hand, took you into his realm. Thank you Gery for the time you shared with me.

June 28, 2010

Our sincere condolences go out to the Habansky family. May God Bless and keep you and give you strength and peace during your time of bereavement. Your dad and husband was a wonderful dentist to our children Keichelle, Kemeya and Kobi. He always greeted our children as if they were his ONLY patients. He was kind and understanding. Since Keichelle and Kemeya also attended St. Thomas where his children attended I can recall the time after a mass @ which time Kemeya was in Kindergarten how happy she was to see him and jumped up in his arms and he was as openly loving towards her. I can also recall the time when Kemeya was a finger sucker for 13 years and I wanted him to put an appliance in her mouth that would stop her from sucking her fingers and he simply said to me "Mrs. Spence, I wouldn't do anything to Kemeya that I wouldn't do to my own children" so he refused and said, in time she will stop, Well she did, didn't need braces and now has beautiful teeth. And as Keichelle's baby teeth left and were replaced by her permanent teeth he found a way to make her very big teeth fit into her small mouth, and again no braces were needed. I say all this just to show the love, care and concern that Dr. Habansky had for his patients. We felt more like his family as patients and he will be sorely missed for his compassionate and caring spirit. God bless the entire Habansky family. May you get peace knowing the love and care your father had for others.
