H. Paul Herman Obituary

Deacon LT. H. Paul Herman Esq.
Deacon Lt. H. Paul Herman, Esq., 87, of Trumbull, entered eternal life on December 26, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born to the late Harold Paul Sr. and Elsie (Klarman) Herman, he grew up in Floral Park, NY and spent summers at Candlewood Lake Club in New Milford, where he met the love of his life, Elizabeth. He is survived by his devoted sister, Marybeth Wood, his loving children, Susan de Alejos (Richie), Marianne Schell (Steven), Christina Cylwik (Erik), and Andrew Herman (Cindy); adored grandchildren Elizabeth Schell (Jamie), Julianne Fullard (Ausar), Aleksander, Lukas, and Katryna Cylwik, and Jacob Herman; he was predeceased by his precious daughter, Jane, and his beloved wife of 55 years, Elizabeth. He is also survived by cherished sisters-in law, nieces, nephews, godchildren, those he served as a spiritual guide, and a host of family friends who called him Dad.
Paul graduated from Georgetown University and Georgetown Law School. He practiced general law in NY and CT, as well as taught at Sacred Heart University and Housatonic CC. For years, he provided pro bono legal services for refugees and immigrants at the non-profit International Institute. He was an insatiable learner and avid reader with a love of philosophy and theology. Never one to sit still, Paul sought adventures outdoors, including marathons, triathlons, and he even rode his bike from CT to Montreal.
In addition to his professional career as an attorney, Paul became a Deacon in the Catholic Church, ordained in Bridgeport in 1986. He served as a deacon at St. Theresa Church from 1986 to 2005 and later at St. Matthew Church in Charlotte, NC from 2005 to 2012. He continued his ministry, teaching scripture classes until 2021, when returned to CT to the home constructed for him by his son-in-law, Erik. As a pastoral counselor, he worked to ease the suffering of those with mental health issues and addiction. He and Elizabeth became members of the Franciscan Order. Like Saint Francis, he was a lover of animals, taking in numerous stray cats over the years and his beloved little dog, Theo.
Friends may greet the family on Thursday, January 2, 2025, from 4-7pm at the Cyril F. Mullins Funeral Home, 399 White Plains Rd., Trumbull. A Mass of Christian Burial followed by Military Funeral Honors will take place on Friday, January 3, 2025, at 11am at St. Theresa Church, 5301 Main St., Trumbull. Private interment will follow at Holy Rood Cemetery, Westbury, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, www.st.jude.org .

Paul was a good friend of my mom in Trumbull political circles. He was soft spoken and kind. Intelligent and focused. He was a man of his word. I am sorry for your loss but believe that he is above us smiling with his wife and daughter. May you cherish good memories and smile. My thoughts and prayers with you.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace - Mr.Herman, Horehound Monger, H.Paul ,Ogre, Deacon, Poppy seed ,Horse, ESQ.
He left his mark & made a profound impact leaving this world a better place rich with many fond memories.
To know him was to love him ... keen stylish fashion sense, jeopardy smart, kind ,caring, compassionate, generous, often teaching a life lesson with hope & faith to nurture our souls. Patient- most times. Played a mean organ, gathering a crowd on the stairs of #144 for a church tune sing along "Amen".
Explored local woods for a nature adventure ,inclusive wood chopping ,stacking & stove skills always providing warmth. Tractor lawn mowing driving lessons, giant leaf piles for jumping, creative outdoor Easter egg hunt hider, in addition to neighborhood Christmas caroling with Christmas cheer, sled riding, after dinner walks around the block gathering his flock along the way, sharing the good word of the day, swimming to the docks at CLC, missing keys at Brookside Trail - Home of "You ride the bike "
Honored & grateful for taking me under your wing, the years of love ,patience & guidance.
Family - Thank all of you for sharing him with all of us,
