John Garrity Obituary

GARRITY John K. Garrity, of Bridgeport, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at St. Vincent Medical Center, Bridgeport surrounded by his loving family. Born in Bridgeport, he was the son of the late Walter and Mary (Bannon) Garrity and was a Bridgeport and Fairfield resident all of his life. He was a graduate of Holy Cross College, Fordham University School of Law and pursued advanced studies in taxation at New York University Graduate School. John proudly served in the United States Navy in World War II. He was employed as a tax lawyer with American Airlines, Chrysler Corporation, IBM and also a Public Accountant with Price Waterhouse in New York City. He served as Controller of the Heim Company in Fairfield and was associated with the Legal Department of Warnaco Inc. where he served in tax capacities including tax counsel for more than 10 years. Survivors include his beloved wife, JoAnn P. (Puglia) Garrity, his devoted children, Sharon Scully and husband, Kevin of Mashpee, Mass., Sean Garrity and wife, Christina of Fairfield, Mary Gumpper and husband Buddy of Fairfield, Michael Garrity and wife Carole of Westport, Deirdre Halper and husband, John of Westport; his loving grandchildren, Evan O'Sullivan, Mason and Kyle Garrity, Alison and Kelly Gumpper, Michael, Annie and Grace Garrity, Wil and Dylan Halper; one brother, James Garrity and wife Ann; his mother-in-law, Rose Puglia; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Jean Puglia and family; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Walter W. Garrity and Joseph L. Garrity. John had a quick wit and a twinkle in his eyes that will be sorely missed by all. Friends are invited to attend the funeral on Saturday May 23, 2009 at 10 a.m. DIRECTLY in Holy Family Church, 700 Old Stratfield Rd., Fairfield with a Mass of the Christian Burial. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements entrusted to the Parente-Lauro Funeral Home, 559 Washington Avenue, Bridgeport. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, New England Division, 30 Speen St. Framingham, MA 01701 in memory of John. www.parentelauro.com.
