Robert Cleaver Obituary

CLEAVER Dr. Robert S. Cleaver, age 84, of Lenox, Mass., died on Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center. He was born in Brewster, N.Y., on April 14, 1920, the son of Dr. Robert and Lucy McGrath Cleaver. He was a graduate of Brewster High School and attended Taft School in Watertown, for one year, then went on to Williams College, graduating in 1942. He attended Cornell University Medical College, graduating in 1945. During the war years, the Army and Navy had taken over the medical colleges to get all the doctors it could quickly. He served in the Army in the occupation of Japan in 1946 and 1947, and was discharged with the rank of captain in the Medical Corps. After the service, he was in resident training in radiology with certification in 1952. He was recalled for active duty during the Korean War, serving until 1953. In 1954 he was asked to join the radiology partnership of Lockhart and Esposito (later Bridgeport Radiology Associates). He also served on the Radiology Department of Bridgeport Hospital, retiring in 1985. He lived in Fairfield, until moving to Kimball Farms in 1992. After his retirement, he was active as a volunteer for the annual book sale project at the Pequot Library in Southport. He was an active volunteer with the Bridgeport School Volunteer Association, tutoring second grades in reading at Maplewood School for many years. He is survived by his wife, the former Alma A. Pepernik, whom he married on April 30, 1949; two sons, Richard J. Cleaver of Lee, Mass., and Robert C. Cleaver and his wife, Debra Ann, of Erieville, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Stephanie Beth and Robert William. The funeral for Dr. Robert S. Cleaver was held on Wednesday morning, July 28, 2004, at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Lenox, Mass., with the Rev. Stephen P. Booth, rector, officiating. Burial followed in Fairmount Cemetery in Lee, Mass.
