When my husband got his first job out of college teaching auto shop at Andrew Warde High School, Elmer and Rose welcomed us into the community. They were important people in our lives. I loved their red house, with its humorous provenance, meticulously restored woodwork, Christmas trees planted in the yard. Rose's mom still lived with them, the European way, as in my family. Even now at Christmas, I think of the big tin filled with fragrant eastern European pastries they shared with us. Their legacy was one of kindness and warmth. Everyone should know people like this. A great loss.
